do i need to tell the DVLA or insurance company about lupus
I wrote a letter to the DVLA telling them about my diagnosis and listing my medication. I think it is wise to do so.
Not sure what type of insurance you are referring to.
Hi Jude thank you for your reply,I am referring to car and life insurance
Hi there
If you already have life insurance, which you took out before the onset of lupus (and before you had any symptoms) then you don't need to tell your insurer.
However if you are in any doubt, then if you write to tell them, they will confirm whether or not your insurance is affected or not. It will only be affected if they find that you had health problems at the time your policy went on risk (or prior to that date) that they were not aware of, that, had they been aware of at that time, would have meant them giving you different terms to what they offered you.
Sorry I'm not sure about car insurance.
Thank you, I only ask as I changed my car insurance and they asked if i had any illness the DVLA were aware of, never been asked in past and didnt answer the question either
No you don't need to on both.as long as your live insurance was taken before Lupus.
No harm in telling the DVLA,but i don't think that many of us Lupies have done that.
All the best
The DVLA have a list of illnesses that could affect your driving, if you have any of these you must advise them. Lupus, however, is not one of them.
The following link might be of use to you.
Thanks for the link.
Yes I have not informed the DVLA re the Lupus - but they are aware of my other auto immune disorders. However, if i feel too tired to drive then i won't it is not worth the risk!
thank you all and the link was very interesting forthe dvla
sorry but disagree with not telling DVLA i have had lupus 11 years and told DVLA immediately when i was diagnose. I have a 3 yrs restricted licence and has been replaced several times free of charge. Better to be safe than sorry is my motto.

It could be advisable to inform the DVLA if you experience symptoms that could affect your ability to drive. Lupus is mentioned on the list of illnesses that needs to be disclosed, but if for example. your lupus causes seizures, then they would need to be informed about it. There is no black and white answer to this one. You have to make a judgement based on the symptoms you experience.
if you get DLA higher allowance you are entitled to free tax on your car, it is shown as a disabled driver on the tax disc.
