Pain relief

I spoke to the rheumatologist about constant pain in the back. He's suggesting Gabapentin or Amitryptalin. Does anyone have any experience of taking this?

Hi, I take Amitriptyline 25mg for what I call lupus migraine. I take it each night with my Hydroxychloroquine before I go to sleep and haven't had a bad head since I started taking it at the end of September.

I think it's a wonder drug.

I tried amitryptalin but after a few months felt no benefit. My specialist has just suggested gabapentin so I'm seeing gp next Monday to discuss it. Hope you feel benefit from 1 of them

I was given gaberpentin to help with shingles pain. I was on the lowest dose for a few months, just at night. When I was in hospital they upped the dose by two thirds without telling me and I had a day away with the fairies until I realised what had happened. I would treat it with caution, but I had no problem stopping it.

Thanks, I'll watch the dosage.

I take Amitriptylene for bed time to relax my muscles & joints, this helps me to sleep better as my muscles are not so up tight & that means less pain.

My mum took Gavapentin but started hallucinating with it, she has pain resulting from a serious fall.

In hospital they tripled the dose for one day and I wasn't far from hallucinating. I just stopped it and won't be in a hurry to use it in future

Hi dwilsher

I take Amitriptyline and Gabapentin for nerve pain and find them both helpful. If you start Gabapentin make sure you start it at the lowest dose and then you build up over a few days until you find the dose that gives relief. Your GP should know how to do this. Amitriptyline is a good relaxant and has anti- depressant properties too. You can start on 10 mg and then go up to 20 or 25 mg being careful not to get a dry mouth. That can be a difficult side effect!. Good luck for when you try, hope they help. X

I think my flare up was due to the flu jab I had.

Amitryptilline never did anything for me but give me dry mouth. Gabapentin was helpful ( no fairies, unfortunately), but 25 lbs weight gain in the blink of an eye. So no more gabapentin.

Ooops, I'll keep that in mind, Thanks

I've been using amitryptyline for an inflamed sacral joint with tramadol for 2 years. I'm on half a tablet at night as anything higher gave me drowsiness the next day. Nortryptaline may be an alternative
