Amoxicillin with lupus

Hi everyone,

I would like to ask if anyone with Systemic Lupus has been adversely affected by taking amoxicillin (which contains penicillin). I have been taking this drug for over 10 days now and feel it may have caused my lupus to flare. Has anyone else had this experience? Thank you

Amoxicillin is the only antibiotic that I cannot take due to adverse reaction. But I've never considered it to be due to Lupus.

I can't take anything containing penicillin, that's from childhood, I wonder if it's associated

I became severly allergic to any tablet which contains Penicillin about a year after I was diagnosed with SLE. However, as time as moved on I have become more and more allergic to other antibiotics and now there are only a few I can take safely. This allergy has been put down to SLE as I didn't have it before my diagnosis. Have a word with your Lupus doctors, get their advice and I hope you feel well soon.

Hi. I developed Lupus after a severe reaction to penicillin some 25 years ago. I was critically ill and my immune system seemed to go berserk. I have read of this being suspected as a causative factor in others. From a different viewpoint, infections (vaccinations and viruses too) invariably trigger a flare in me. Hope you feel better soon. Hi yes can not have penicillin, just few days ago dr changed antibiotics due my infection not healing . 45 minutes after taking doxycyclline.given had reaction fever vomiting prickly rash red face I rang dr a dr on call changed me to cloriflaxin.

Was very ill from doxycyclline.given yet I'd had it before with a photosensitive reaction nothing else.

Im.ok on new one.

Pharmacist had be alerted who checked me over.

Now I often have mini flare with infections.

In fact always as I do at menstrual cycle time month.

Do tell your rheumatologist I shall be documenting as with lupus brain fog im.bound to forget.

Hope you find one that you don't react to.

Hugs

I believe doxycycline is contra indicated in lupus , could be cause of flares in some people. Hope you feel better. I too am allergic to penicillin since being a child , will not risk taking it M x

I'm allergic to penicillin so I can't take any of its derivatives, amoxicillin being one of those. But whichever antibiotic I take I feel dreadful while on it and my lupus gets slightly more active for some reason.

I don't have Lupus officially but I have RA and Hashimoto's. I've just had a week on Amoxicillin followed by Clarithromycin for Flu/ Pneumonia. My chest seems to be clear at last but my small fiber neuropathy/ RA seem to be flaring. The doctor blames the flu/ pneumonia for exacerbating my immune system but I am not so sure because I was already in pain and the antibiotics made me feel absolutely awful - especially the Clarithromycin.

Thank you for your replies and kind wishes. I will be glad when I finish the antibiotics.

Amoxicillin is one of the drugs I have had a bad reaction to. I discovered I was allergic to penicillin when I was in my 20s (my father was too) but I didn't realise that my GP had given me something in the same group for an acne-like skin problem. I took a low dose for quite a while before eventually being diagnosed with Lupus. Some years later I found an old leaflet from the pills and it said not to be taken if you have SLE. I was also allergic to Septrin, prescribed before I got Lupus, but my doctor later said that nearly everyone was allergic to that.

I am pretty convinced that my Lupus was sparked by a series of allergic reactions to penicillin-type drugs.

I can use antibiotics but I always make sure the prescribing doctor knows my dodgy medical history and allergic reactions.

I agree I think antibiotics and lupus have to be taken with caution. I have problems with penicillin a horrible reaction to septrin and erythromycin, rash and vomiting. Doxycycline and nitro furoantoin can put me into a flare the latter after 3 doses. It’s interesting but no fun . I try and stay well. Take care hope you do to M x

I have just been diagnosed with systemic lupus but have had severe arthritis, especially in my knees, for years. It is very bad. I can barely walk. They want to operate but I am a caregiver to my mother. We don't have any other family so there is no one else to help my mother. Lately, I had been using a walker because my knee got so bad. Then, I had a shot for a lupus rash that had formed on my arm (first rash that actually itched). within a day or two I was walking with just slight pain. I have been on amoxicillin for an ear ache that had occurred at the same time. Each day my arthritis is better. I am scared when I run out of it in twenty days. For me, it has been a total miracle!
