Shazzer, I think he'll stay with medicine for all 4 Reith lectures (BBC radio 4, Tuesday's @9), but he is a deep yet practical thinker, and such a great humanist that his commentary is always as broad as life. He has written some of the v finest & most constructive contemporary critiques of medicine in our time. And he is being listened to, which makes me feel more hopeful for our future & the future of our young.

you can get these lectures via podcast off the BBC radio 4 site

Thanks! Will have a listen. Not at work at the minute so glad to have some sort of outside stimulus!

I heard a bit this morning and my husband told me I must listen properly tonight before my long awaited neurology appointment tomorrow - thanks for the reminder Barnclown I'm rather looking forward to it after the snippet I caught today! Tx

You're vvv welcome. His books are WONDERFUL...and his New Yorker articles (most of which are incorporated in his books). Maybe you've read his stuff too

Best wishes (a bouquet-full!) to you twitchy...hope all goes constructively tomorrow! And hope you'll let us know how you get on...in plenty of detail: am counting on you

Oh yeah, I read about that, thanks for the reminder!

I haven't read his work at all but am really looking forward to listening to this lecture on iplayer now - afterwards I'm going to take a sleeping pill and hope to conk out for most of the night as my flight leaves at dawn tomorrow and I haven't slept since I stopped all meds over two weeks ago now.

Thanks so much for your good wishes both of you - it means a lot to me. Txx

Good luck tomorrow Twitchy, will be thinking about you.

Barnclown, there is a medical blog called A better NHS, the standard of writing is excellent and it's very thought provoking. They blogged today about Dr Gawande's latest book, also a Dr Margaret Mcartney who is well worth checking out.

Will catch up with the lectures on I player, thank you.
