Mouth Problems

Hi the night before last I woke to find my pillow and myself covered in blood, it was coming from my mouth. The doctor said it was due to high B/P and infected gums. I have sjogren's syndrome and lupus, has anyone else had anything like this, it has worried me so much I have been sleeping in the chair. Any advice would be helpful.

I get very large blood filled blisters in my mouth and they bleed when they burst.

My gums bleed a lot. The infected gums isn't uncommon - I find it really difficult to see NHS dentists as the ones I've seen often don't take illness into account. I've had periodontal disease for some time but the work dentists try to do with cleaning brings on a flare and makes it worse.

I would hope with infection they've offered antibiotics? Cleaning teeth with mouth trouble is a real pita, however. What I started doing is called oil-pulling and rinsing my mouth with salt water. I was pretty skeptical but I don't wake up anymore with a nasty taste in my mouth, and no more bleeding. Basic thing you do is swish oil in your mouth for about 10-20 mins. It feels really funky at first; takes getting used to but it gets easier. You spit out the oil then rinse with salt water solution, then brush with a soft bristle brush. Twice a day works well. Maybe give it a go? The only way to see if someone works for one is to try.

Good luck!

I have read about oil pulling as well

They say the best oil to use is sesame oil if you can get it and can get used to the taste

I haven't managed to add it to my routine but have read that if you raise your levels of vit c, zinc and vit d3 it seems highly beneficial

See your dentist Shanti or talk to your rheumatologist.

I was diagnosed with sjogrens a couple of years ago. My mouth was very sticky and I was having problems chewing and swallowing dry food - not enough saliva. Had a badly infected tooth at the back that I didn't know was infected as I wasn't in any pain and one or two teeth were crumbling. No sense of taste either. I mentioned it all to the lupus nurse at the hospital where I go for 2 yearly checks and she referred me to the dental hospital where I've been going ever since..

They took 4 or 5 teeth out. I was prescribed moisturising toothpaste and mouthwash and an antiseptic mouthwash as I was getting mouth sores. My taste is back and they are sorting me out with partial dentures. The mouth ulcers have lessened as well and they did the biopsy that came back positive. I chew a lot of sugar free gum these days to stimulate saliva and drink as much as I can....My gums used to bleed a bit but thats stopped. You need to talk to a specialist who can advise and help you properly xxx

Thanks Chrisj will see how far I get with that one. My rheumatologist just referred me back to my GP as my most recent flare is now over. Will try and talk to my dentist.

Hi,

I haven't experienced this myself but know someone who has. Cause was high blood pressure and the medication (her meds were hormone tablets). Other meds can cause too.

Feel for you, please take care xx
