Explain what Costochontritis- Pericarditis is
Hi il79
Pericarditis is inflammation of the lining of the heart and I think Chostocronditis is inflammation in the rib area but not too sure of that one! They are both very painful!. Hope that helps.X
I had costochondritis last October and I was told it was inflammation of the cartlidge between the ribs and breastbone, resulting in excruciating pain when ever you move.

Here are some links from patient.co.uk which is a very good information source on medical conditions;

Costochontritis is indeed very painful - I had it when I contracted pleurisy last Autumn (and that's what led me to the Forum, so that was my silver cloud in a very dark night!). I was told by the consultant that it's common for those of us with auto-immune conditions. Sorry!
I have had the costachondrites, pain in the chest/rib area and it is painful. I also found it frightening, as I didn't know what was causing it at first. It is mentioned in the books I have on Lupus and is caused by the condition. It is not anything to do with the heart. Sorry to hear that you are suffering with these.
This is interesting as I was diagnosed with myocarditis, or inflammatory cardiomyopathy, several years ago - inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). The doctor, at the time, didn't mention Lupus. However, over the years, I noticed in my records it stated tachycardia and other heart discrepancies, but no reason for them.
Now I suffer from unexplained pain in the chest/ribs area and it is worrying, painful and restricting. It can be just for a day or few days, thankfully, but the myocarditis lasted weeks.
My husband has costochondritis. It is fairly easy to diagnose as a doctor can bring on the pain by applying pressure on the sternum. Relieved when we found out what it was as the pain was as intense as when he had a heart attack. Takes painkillers regularly for it.
Hope you get sorted out soon
Margaret
