I've been on Hydroxychloroquine for about a week (200mg twice daily) and I have to say I have the most awful problem with farting... I am taking various windeze type products to try and counteract this but I can't say they're having much effect! Is this a common problem? Does it wear off? Please say it does - my partner is starting to curse me!
I'm newly diagnosed with mixed connective tissue disease (after 12 years of consultants) and I have to say that it is exciting to finally have a diagnosis and potential treatment options at last.
Thanks!

I was on hydroxychloroquine for many ears but did not have any of the 'wind' problems. However, more recently I did start to get lots of flatulence and still do. I have tracked it down to diet. Beans are the worst and if I overeat it seems to be worse.
It's good that you have finally got a diagnosis and I hope that you feel lots better.
I'm with Jude: hydroxychloroquine doesn't give me wind, but beans are very iffy! Especially any form of soyabeans: the worst! And that includes soya milk. I figured this out cause i'd spent several years replacing cow milk with soya milk in my diet. Meanwhile I was having a lot of smelly wind. Then recently I began reading up on nutrition & lupus, and to my surprise actually found several nutrition scientists warning that there is something about soya that disagrees with lupus, so we should avoid it. So I gave up soya milk and hey presto: wind stopped totally. Of course your problem may be due to something else entirely...but seems to me diet & exercise can often help with wind probs.
on the other hand, I started hydroxy. last June and it did take me a few weeks to stop having a bit of heartburn with each pill - I solved that by making sure I ate a bit more carbohydrate with each meal (and I walkways take my pills after a main meal)
I started hydroxy at the start of the year and since then have been nauseous in the mornings and my ibs has been playing up. I get awful tummy pains, terrible smelly wind which is not good for a pleasant home or work environment and my tummy makes the most horrendous noises. Renal clinic have said to come off at as joints are still as bad and can't put up with the side effects. Plus my hair (which had already become really thin) has gone really brittle and is coming out more. Just waiting to hear from rheumy that's its ok to stop.
Oh dear, sorry to hear it really didn't work for you. My hair seems OK so far, touch wood, but I'll keep an eye on it. I don't get nauseous as long as I take it after food I've found. But definitely got the wind! Now just hoping that it stops soon...
i have been on hydroxychloroquine now for 7yrs and have never noticed excess wind or an offensive smell of the wind,i dont like to pass wind like most women i think but my wind isnt to bad at all, keep on with them and give time a chance it may wear off soon....xxx
Hi Jenny, yes, it was terrible, it has gone slightly better but not much!! I am the same as you, been years waiting trying to find out whats wrong and dx with ctd at the moment and on the hydroxy sine 6th dec. I however, have found over the last few weeks I am very constipated its cracking me up. Still very windy but not as bad as it was, so you not on your own, but you will be if you keep on like this :0 hope it eases for you, take care, Mandy x
Glad to hear it's improved - even slightly! Perhaps I can adjust my diet enough to sort it out because I do really want to give it a fair trial. I had IBS before so maybe it has just triggered that off more. Shame, as things in that direction had just settled down!
I was on Hydroxy but did not find wind a problem it was cramping and griping pains that made me stop the medication. I have been taking prednisolone on and off since 2007 and I find that eating certain vegetables whilst on steroid is the cause of the flatulence. I have stopped eating carrots, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower I only eat green beans now.
It seems to be improving slightly so fingers crossed that it will wear off completely in time. No effects yet from the Hydroxy itself but they warned me it would take at least 3 months to decide whether it was helping the pain. We shall see!
Since the consultant increased my hydroxy to 200mg twice a day i have suffered from wind ........ some days are worse than others and am trying to work out if eating certain things make it worse than other!!!!!!!!!!!!! My daughter is mortified.....often silent & deadly!!! Sorry for being graphic!!! xx
Oh yes, definitely silent and deadly... On the same dosage as you too. I haven't changed what I eat, but to be fair I always did have a problem with baked beans and chickpeas - but doesn't everyone!
Things are still improving so fingers crossed. I'm also trying to work out whether it's certain foods...
I've just started taking Plaquenil again after a gap since last August, stopped because of an eye problem that was found to be not due to Plaquenil. I started feeling ill again in January and started Plaquenil two weeks ago. I was already a bit windy but I think this has increased, although I've never had a problem before. I don't eat beans so can't blame it on that but I do take Splendour in my coffee, which I understand can be a problem. What I haven't eaten as much lately are grapes, which I think I will start again. I had lost my appetite and lost weight but it is selective, put steak and chips in front of me and I don't have a problem.
😹😹😹oh my..u have made me chuckle this morning!! 😹😹 Thanx for that 🤗🤗

I read an article that your stomach during a flare uses hydrogen sulfide gas from muscles to try to limit the damage a flare can have on your digestive track..I have been having rotten eggs smelling gas which is due to sulfur . I just started the hydroxycloroquine yesterday so that’s not the reason but I think it’s that your digestive track is trying to compensate the attack it’s under
