Resuvastatin ( Cresta) Once a week???

Hello People

I have mega Cholesterol and Triglycerides, both hit the 11's recently. In the last decade I have been tried on 4 different Statins, but unfortunately I produce a lot of Creatine Kinase (CK), which causes cramps and muscle problems, and the Statin make it much worse.

Resuvastatin is meant to be the newest 'cleanest' ( and most expensive) on the market, and my target dose should be the max of 40mg per day. But for safety sake, I was started on only 5mg daily. And bloods after 4 weeks.

The test results came back showing an improvement to the blood fats, but a CK of 500+ (target is below 175) which prompted my GP to call me and take me off them.

However a few days later I went to Guys and the nurse specialist told me to go back on at a reduced dose of only 5mg once a week. And not to come off unless the CK hits nearer 1500. ( This goes against all previous advice for CK levels, and is frankly a bit scary )

But my question is? : Does anyone else know of a Statin working at so low a dose?

I don't have an answer, unfortunately, but I'm keen to find out about your experience. My husband is due to start this new statin shortly, although I'm not yet sure of the prescribed dose.

Hello Purpletop

Apparently this new statin is the 'cleanest' which is to say, very effective but without the side-effects. but in my case i could feel something was not right in my muscles after a few days. I was started on 5mg daily which is the lowest dose according to the leaflet. Seems that it is normal to start with a low dose and work your way up. 40mg being the highest.

I have now re-started on only 5mg weekly, and I am already a tiny bit crampy and have a heavy feeling in my legs, ( like after lying on a cold floor.)

I will try to do as the docs say, but if the cramps get worse i will bin the stuff.

The bottom line is that my cholesterol is very high, but so far all tests show no sign of cardio-vascular problems. I was lucky enough to take past in a trial study which looked into my Brachial artery -this found zero atherial sclerosis and zero thrombosis.

That is such good news, clean arteries with such high cholesterol and triglycerides. Your body must do something to make the fats not stick, great. The cramps might go away if you persevere but muscle weakness is not something one can ignore. Let me know how you get on, please and all the best!
