Not had the same but side effects.......get manuka honey 10+ and make him have a tablespoon before and after each radiotherapy treatment. It does stop the osephagus from burning. There is also a bottle of med they can prescribe with local anaesthetic that can be used if there is pain on swallowing. He may feel a bit sick, so anti nausea to take if necessary.
I had 30x sessions of radiotherapy to chest and neck- agree that manuka honey is good (you can get it in supermarkets, different strengths 5, 10, 15 and the price goes up accordingly!). As Julie says, there is also a liquid they can prescribe to help with swallowing if he is having trouble. I had the prescription for some but luckily never needed it.
He may find eating some foods difficult as the treatment progresses and appetite will reduce. Soft foods are good and probably good to go for higher calorie if he isn't eating much. I liked things like scrambled egg, porridge etc. My sense of taste disappeared as well (or went a bit awry!) - it has come back now but sweet taste was the last to return. Some things he may usually like may not be so lovely and he may like things unexpectedly!!
One other thing to think of is moisturising the skin area. They gave me some cream and I applied it from the start (rather than waiting until the area becomes sensitive).
I hope that he tolerates the treatments well - they don't take very long for each session.
Keep your chin up. I know sometimes it all feels so out of your control and you just have to go along with things - but hopefully the treatment will have good effect for your husband and any discomforts during treatment will be counteracted by the benefits received from it.
Janey Thank you so much for your reply We seem to take one step forward and 4 back as Bill still in hospital fighting infection but it seems to be getting under control. Have got some of the honey and take on board your comment about cream for skin this could be a bit difficult as he not into creams on skin but will give it a go. My very best wishes to you nd thank you again.
Some patients experience difficulties such as dry mouth and taste alteration following radiotherapy which may affect the appetite. Your lung cancer nurse specialist will advise you about the use of use of nutritional supplements and preparations for dry mouth.
