How is lymphedema diagnosed?

I had breast cancer. I had a double mastectomy. Soon after my arms swelled up and I was diagnosed with lymphedema. I wear arm sleeves. I am now battling cellulitis on my legs. I am on week 5 of both antibiotics and penicillin. My legs are extremely swollen where I don't have the soreness. I asked my GP if she thought it was lymphedema and she said possibly but I should ask my Lymphedema therapist. I had my ovaries removed 2 years ago. Would there be any connection?

Yes, there could be a connection. Get in touch with your lymphoedema therapist and get advice.

I have had left breast cancer and had left mastectomy and lymph node removal. As a result I have lymphoedema in my left arm. Whilst on chemotherapy I had cellulitis in my right leg as a result of untreated phleabitis. I was in hospital for 10 days with antibiotics being fed into me via a drip which eventually cleared it up and so far I have had no trouble since. You don't mention whether you are on chemo or not but if you are this may be a connection. Hope you get it sorted soon.

I had chemo 3 years ago. I have an appointment with my therapist in 2 weeks so I will see what she says. I am just beginning to accept the lymphedema in both arms I need to get it into my head that if I do have it on my legs I can and will manage it just as well I am doing my arms!

I know I have been extremely lucky to see Professor Mortimer today. He had a cancelled appointment which I was offered. I have still been taking antibiotics for my legs and have had intravenous antibiotics for the last 3 days. Professor told me to stop antibiotics and said I have a condition called lipodermatosclerosis. He is arranging some scans for me and said I should buy compression socks in the meantime.

Has anyone heard of this condition? Any ideas of treatment?
