Surgical sperm retrieval

Hi everyone,

I am new to this and have been reading different stories based on different scenarios so thought I would give it a go...

My partner and I have been TTC for a couple of years now but have been unfortunate due to low count and motility. We got to the stage of undergoing ICSI and my partner was asked to produce sperm samples as a back-up if he could not produce anything on the day. However, this was unsuccessful as he wasn’t able to produce any ‘swimmers’ from all the samples that he give. Therefore, they recommended for him to take Impryl for three months to see if that makes a difference.

He has another four weeks to go but we had our consultation the other day and they have spoken about surgically removing the sperm as an option.

We are trying to get our heads around this option and wanted to know whether anyone has been through anything similar and whether there are any success stories?

As you know it’s a rollercoaster of a journey and want to feel that something positive will happen?

Has anyone taken Impryl with a similar background and has it worked? Also, has anyone ever had the SSR and how does it work?

Thank you in advance xx

Hi, my husband had this done, unfortunately they couldn’t find any and they tried 5 times, after looking closer they had found some that hadn’t matured but from what we got that’s our issue they aren’t maturing and they don’t know why... he didn’t find the procedure too uncomfortable and he was given gas and air which he didn’t need to use in the end, a bit tender of course for the next couple of weeks and a bit of bruising.

Fingers crossed for you both I understand what your going through. It sounds positive as a low count is better than no count, don’t forget that xx

Thank you for your lovely words! It’s a very emotional rollercoaster undergoing all of this. He’s having his scan today before he is booked in for the retrieval. Do you think we will have long to wait. It seems like everything is waiting 😢

I’m really sorry for your situation and I am sending so much positivity your way for your next steps xxx

I think it took a couple of months but then Covid happened as well so that knocked it back, it all is a massive waiting game I think we have been going through tests etc for about 2 years now, to start I found that my doctor wasn’t too sure on who to refer us too etc and the process which probably didn’t help. He found out from his scan quite quickly though and once he has the retrieval you will get a good idea of the outcome of the day. Just keep busy and remember how solid your relationship is and you can get through this! It brings you together but you must remember to talk to each other and express your feelings xxxx
