14 days and still fighting.

Hi all, I wrote on here 9 days ago as my dad was in an induced coma. He did try slightly to wake up but wasn't any response, doctors sent him for an MRI scan which revealed his kidneys had failed as he wasn't urinating or responding due to complications on his stomach, they believe whilst he was trying to awake he was tensing and his stomach so stomach wall went solid so was squasing his organs so had to put him back to sleep to try and relax, there is talk about dialysis, has anybody had this and how effective is it.my dad has been fighting for 2 weeks now . Not covid related it's due to his oesophagus erupting and contents spilling out in to internal organs, very rare and very very unfortunate.

Hi. No exact experience as you and your dad but my husband had some form of dialysis early on when he was in ICU. I think a lot of critically ill patients end up having some as the organs need so much help while they are so poorly.

Critical Care Support Network have a relatives support group tonight at 8pm which you would be more than welcome to join. I know one of the other relatives probably knows quite a bit about dialysis but we all have experience of relatives who have been (or still are) critically ill so we should be able to offer some kind words and some advice xx

It took them to bring me round. The view taken was that I would come round when I was ready. That would start o reduce and I couldn’t cope so was put back under - at least so I am told. I wasn’t covid either but your body seems to shut down to cope.

Take care of your self.

I was on dialysis for 7weeks due to septic shock and multiple organ failure - I was intubated for over 2 months

HiKidney problems when in an induced coma and ventilated are very common I was in an induced coma for 4 weeks and my kidneys stopped working and I was on dialysis when I did wake I was on dialysis 3 times a week the dialysis team were excellent and said that kidneys are like men the first sign of trouble and they bugger off!

The good news is that they normally start working again and the dialysis is temporary hope that helps

My brother also had kidney issues when he was in critical care. They used a machine called a filter while his kidneys weren’t working. The advice we were given is that the kidneys will be the last things to recover and they did slowly. I will send you some more information directly by chat.

It’s relatively normal whilst in icu. The definition is basically that you’re critically ill so all your organs are assessed to see if they’re functioning properly . It’s better that they’re supported and I’m hopeful for you that he’ll improve

Hi. Sorry about your dad. Last year I had a sepsis and was in ICU for 4 weeks. My organs were affected including my kidneys that failed. I was given 2 blood transfusions to get kidneys working again, although they are now permanetly damaged, so have CKD stage 3b. I now have regular blood tests to monitor my gfr reading .

I was in for 6 weeks and as everyone else says ended up with kidneys not functioning. I don’t remember any of it though and a few months on although not all my problems are solved the kidneys don’t seem to be any problem,

I was told kidneys are the first to go. I was in coma for 3 months and on ECMO for 54 .5 days. My kidneys stopped working immediately. I was told lack of oxygen and also system trauma. I was on dialysis 2 or 3 days a week and for about 2 more months after induced coma until kidney function came back. Thank God ! Anyway, Good Luck to your father, praying for him and your family.
