Covid 19 3 months sick again

Hi

My father is on the vent for 6 weeks. Last week was his best and they were talking of moving him to rehab center. They removed some meds and he was in the process of recovery. He was supposed to get tracheostomy.

But suddenly everything went backwards.. His kidney started failing again and needed dialysis..

His heart was not working good again and was put on vasopressors.. and his lungs needed extra support from the ventilator. Went from 30% to 100%.. now they are talking of turning him over (proning) to help his oxygen but they say his heart could stop..

They don't know whats causing this. They cant find infection. No fluids in the lungs. No blood clots in lung.

This happen so suddenly now we're back to day 1 and they told us again his chances of survival are low.

Anyone have similar problems? I'm clueless to whats happening to his lungs. He's covid negative twice now.. what could be the problem?? I can't believe this is happening. Please help

I hope someone here can give you some reassurance. Critical illness is horrendously precarious- I hope your father turns a corner soon.

All I can say is try to remain positive , my dad has been in icu 11 weeks today and stepped down to a ward earlier this afternoon . Dad had many ups and downs , given very little hope he would survive .

I would say it’s really only these last 4 weeks he’s saw any improvement as before that his condition was described as static and one doctor saying it looked very grim .

But here we are 11 weeks down the line and his improvements is nothing short Of amazing . Xx

ICU was a rollercoaster for us. Lots of ups and downs. Lots of difficult conversations.

I can only hope and pray for your beloved relative to come through this 🙏🏾

Thank you all for the replies..

We just went to see my father since they believe he will not make it. This is the 2nd time I saw him in person and he just looked so bad.

Right now he is deteriorating.. heart lungs kidneys shutting down. Its painful and sad that this illness hurt our loved ones.

I don't if he'll survive tonight but I can only have faith he'll improve again.

Have you asked the doctors about the new steroid drug dexamethason? It’s on the news now.

Keep faith 💕 xxx

Dexamethason sounds very promising for those who are ventilated

Yes we asked about it. They started him on solu medrol. Which is very similar to dexamthason.

So right now he's slowly improving.

He had extreme respiratory acidosis

c02 was 110

PH was 6.91 which is incompatible with life.

Its going up slowly

Yesterday c02 was 87

PH 7.17

Oxygen from ventilator came down from 80% to 50%

I think this corticosteroid is helping him. We will find out today if he's improving even more

I always though he should be given steroids since the start but was aware of the side effects.

I was going to suggest you asking the doctors " if you haven't already asked/or your dad hasn't already been given this " about the drug dexamethasone, but see others have already suggested you asking about it. I'm so sorry your dad is so very critically poorly fighting for his life. I also fought for my own life in 2018 still recovering even now, wasn't expected to survive. Don't give up hope on your dad use all your brain power to try and connect with him to urge him to fight. Our brains connect with people whilst we are conscious and many times from a distance, so surely whilst the brain is still functioning despite being unconscious it should therefore also be possible. The power of thought! When you do see him call his name out loudly, people are far away when unconscious, rising to just below the surface and then falling back down deeply. You can be heard but your voice must be loud sharp and firm as if shouting out a warning. Don't give up, and touch his face if you are allowed.

I was put into an induced coma after a critical asthma attack caused by a virus/infection. They couldn't find the virus/infection but they knew I had one, however it didn't show up on any of the tests that they did on me for virus or infection. I have seen the list of how many tests they did on me, the list is astronomical! All tests carried out came back clear for virus/infection, yet as mentioned already they knew I had one or the other or both running consecutively that had caused my massive asthma attack

but nothing couldn't be found. I have since been told that the reason all the tests they did on me came back clear was because whatever virus or infection I had was most likely something that they haven't encountered before which is why all the tests showed up nothing. They said it was most likely something that just didn't have a test for. I had been very very poorly at home for many months, going in and out of remission undergoing chest x-rays/MRI's/blood tests, being on steroids and antibiotics but nothing worked and then I had the massive critical asthma attack and my life was on the line and my survival not expected. Do not give up on your dad. And have his favourite music played or ask someone to read to him if you are not allowed closer contact. When you lie in bed try to connect with him. Believe me the power of thought and even prayer " I'm not at all religious " is very powerful for those so critically poorly.

DrARDS we also sent dad letters so the nurses could read them out and a voice recorder with music/messages/familiar tv theme tunes etc. I do believe it helped just like Mijmijkey74 states. We pray every day and it’s very powerful ❤️

Hope you receive better news today 🙏

i experienced a severe relapse in my lungs after a week of extubation. everything was going swimmingly and i was due to move to a rehab ward the next morning when everything started failing (lungs, kidney & minor heart) and i was intubated again for a further week before trying again. it was a lot of trial and error but we got there in the end.

following this post & praying you have some positive news today 💛
