Dad - multiple organ failure. Chance of survival - slim

My Dad (68) was admitted to ICU this afternoon. He is in multiple organ failure, on a ventilator & kidney dialysis. He had a heart attack in hospital after being transferred by ambulance due to collapsing. His heart stopped for 25 mins. Manual chest compression were used during this time.

They have said he has a severe liver disease, phenomena & anaemia. Combination of these potentially caused the heart attack. He broke his arm in 2 places last month due to a fall but refused to be admitted. Due to pain he has just sat in the same chair in his house for the last month refusing to move. He had painkillers. As a result he now has bedsores and I was concerned about sepsis. He has high lactate & very low blood pressure, blood sugar and blood oxygen.

Doc had said chance of survival is small but not impossible. I don’t know what to do as can’t be with him, and don’t want him dying alone

That’s all sounds very sad and what an ordeal for your Dad & your family. Whilst I was in ICU, I was so heavily sedated that I was largely unaware of who was around me at any given time - what I was aware of later when I was awake, was that I was looked after by the kindest & most brilliant medical staff. Your Dad will have a nurse with him 24/7 - what I mean is that he isn’t alone ever.

More positively, with the right treatment, people overcome extraordinary series of illnesses.

Although I was admitted for different reasons I was also in multiple organ failure, sepsis, dialysis, ventilator and given a 1% chance of survival, so keep up the hope. I just want to add with Sepsur that I had the most wonderful people caring for me.
