Hi! My dad is on a ventilator with covid too. Unfortunately he also had complications with blood clotting and is in critical condition. It sounds like a good thing that they’re trying to wean your dad off the ventilator. I’m not much help I know, just wanted to reach out and give some support from someone who knows roughly what you’ve been going through. This is just torture and I pray for strength and peace for you and a quick recovery for your dad- please keep us posted!

I usually dipped at night whilst I was in a coma and after I’d woken up - I’m not sure why.

From what I understand the incredibly deep sedation means that we are unable to breath for ourselves. So the ventilator supports the patient's breathing while the primary reason for initiating the ventilation is treated.

If the critical illness has been treated successfully, then the reason for ventilation has gone - being on life support long term increases the chance of other ICU legacies like cognitive dysfunction, muscle waste & chronic fatigue, icu acquired weakness & delirium - there have been posts on all of these subjects in the last week or so.

I am not medically trained so I wouldn’t like to assure you either way over whether they are taking your father off too early - I’m just trying to explain why they might be doing this.

I really feel for all of you relatives, the media is full of very graphic images of ICU - they portray it as a brutal place - let me assure you - ICU is an incredibly calm & peaceful place - your relatives will be being looked after by Superb staff - who are kind and have time.
