My husband is due to have bypass operation in December and will be in icu for a few days afterwards. He is anxious about whether he can take some books and a radio with earplugs in. He is a very poor sleeper and also gets very claustrophobic and these help him to cope. Does anyone know what is allowed? Thanks

What can a patient take into intensive care
Hi I wish you and your husband all the best, hard times for you both. I had everything but the kitchen sink, I was lucky the staff let me take anything within reason. Maybe try phoning the ITU and they can advise you. I remember towards the end of my time haveing sugar puff breakfasts and sweets, magazines, I had a little radio. I was in for sometime though. Lol I remember the wonderful nurses doing my nails for me with nail polish 😁I think your husband will probably pass on that one 😉 . Good luck and stay positive
Thank you, that is reassuring. I just rang the hospital and they were ok about books but the nurse i spoke to wasn't sure about the radio but he can check up with the specialist nurse. Hopefully he will be ok with that
When I was in ICU almost 5 years ago I had a radio beside my bed, the only thing they insisted on was that they pat. tested it before use to comply with electrical regulations as it was plugged into a socket.
I hope all goes well for your husband while in ICU.
