Thyroid test

Really down at the moment as totally exhausted and fit for nothing. I am going to see my GP next week to ask about another thyroid test but I have had numerous negative ones over the years (my mother was diagnosed when I was a teenager). I think someone mentioned they had a private test done? If so how did you arrange this?

Thanks

Hi there registered nutritionists can normally order the tests for you. I did mine via Genova Diagnostics.-. via a nutritionist. They were more detailed. But of course you may just be feeling tired from the APS, but good to check it out, so often turns out to be the case. Mary F x.

Hi - I feel the same! And I am soooooo sure that my thyroid is low. But all my tests come back fine. But I have heard that sometimes it doesn't show up on blood tests always. Hope you get some answers. Wendy

You have to get the full thyroid profile done. So not just the regular TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), but also the T4 and T3 levels. NHS only tests for TSH and if that comes back within 'normal' levels, they don't look any further. But you may not be converting T3 to T4 (or is it the other way round - can never remember!) properly, and that would still require treatment. Also, what is 'normal' for one person may not be 'normal' for the next, so the standard reference ranges aren't all that helpful anyway.

I would also recommend taking Vitamin D as it is critical to thryoid health. It is well know that hypothyroid patients can be Vitamin D deficient. There's a lot of info on the internet and below is one link

My rheumy told me that I should be taking a high enough dose of Vitamin D to get my levels between 80 to 100. I have certainly noticed a great benefit since taking it.

Good luck x
