Mean Platelet Volume.

Because of ongoing troublesome symptoms I had blood test, full blood count.

One of the tests was. mean platelet volume. Range should be between8.2__11.9. Mine was 12.4.

Is this significant. These tests were on 29/8/2024. As yet they have not been reported on by a doctor. I am a little concerned. Is it usual for APS patients to have these results..

Interesting question. Mine just came back high too, as were my erythrocytes. I didn't get any world from my doctor... so I am assuming it is ok? I really don't know.

My platelet count was sky high at the same time I began having DVTs. At that time (early '80s) little was known about APS. I was also anemic and one doctor told me that blood monitors itself via cell volume: when RBC goes down, WBC and platelets go up. And often vice versa, I'm not sure if that is true, but that was the explanation given to me. I was put on warfarin and the DVTs stopped. Then, when RBCs, WBCs and platelet counts returned to normal the warfain was stopped and that was the week I had my first migraine ( which later MRIs showed were actually mini strokes.) It took me a few years of mini strokes before my dx of APS was made and my warfarin doseage resumed. And that sequence if events has lead to my wondering if my dangerously high platelet count is what prompted my immune system to attack platelets? ( Of course, undiagnosed gluten allergy also played a factor as all my blood work since going gluten free has remained consistently normal.)

And I will add that even though all of my APS diagnostic blood tests are now negative for APS , my current doctor keeps me on warfarin for fear that those strokes may return. --Though my target INR range is in the low 2s.

I’ve found that although each test has its normal limits there are some where the doctors really don’t mind if they are a little over or under. Others where they’ll get in touch straight away if there’s even a marginal difference. It’s impossible for us as non medics to know which are which…

All I can suggest is getting in touch with the doctor’s office to confirm they have seen the results and are happy/ perhaps give you a call.
