Hi Hubby just had a call to say needs deltaparin injections for a week as INR dropped from 2.4 to 1.9 is this overkill or good practice. The GP has always been slow to increase warfarin in past so not sure why reacting quickly now. Has lots of comorbities so don't want knee jerk reaction.
Thanks

It depends what the therapeutic range is. If it should be between 3-4, 1.9 is very low, so to protect him from clots while he increases the warfarin enough to get back in range, the injections are a very good idea. I've had to do that before now, but best for you to discuss with the GP
I also think that covering the low inr with the injections suggests that GP is now aware that clotting is by far the biggest risk with this condition, and the risks from a clotting event are very serious.
These injections are routinely used to protect people in hospital who are at risk of clots , at prophylactic doses and it works on a different way to warfarin so it's not the case that you are massively increasing bleeding risk. It's more belt and braces . It is common after clots for people to be put on injections first and kept on them until the INR has hot to a suitable level, so it is considered to be safer than to be just on too low a warfarin level.
