Has anyone had trouble getting Fragmin?

I’m having a minor surgical procedure on Tuesday

so will be bridging with Fragmin

The protocol where I live says you can’t keep Fragmin at home you have to have a new script filled

every time you need it. Personally I think that is very stupid, GP’s don’t always understand the word urgent, and can wait two days for a script.

Once you have the script go to the pharmacist and they say we haven’t got any, by which time my patience is getting very short! They say we will get it for you tomorrow, but as we know tomorrow never comes. I’ve tried several pharmacies and they are all the same.

Needless to say rules are meant to be broken and do

keep some at home, as long as you check it’s in date

I can’t see a problem.

It all adds up to a very tense time, worried about surgery, worried about getting Fragmin etc.

It’s a good thing I’m fairly laid back otherwise I would be a complete wreck.

I do sometimes have trouble getting my correct dose fragmin from my local pharmacy. They've been known to give me 3 injections per day because they are unable to obtain the correct ones. In that case I get from my anti coagulation clinic at the hospital. When I was having surgery I asked the hospital to supply them which they did.

I also get a months worth at a time but when I wasn't taking it everyday and just needed it for surgery my GP was very reluctant to prescribe it and he's normally very good which was why I got my fragmin for surgery from the Hospital.

The Anti-coag clinic up here is nurse led, they are very good, tho I’m still not sure who is overseeing the clinic. They fax through a request to the GP and in theory I should get the script the same day, in

practice this doesn’t always happen. Then to the pharmacy to get it filled which might take three days!

I have asked for a script when I haven’t needed it to keep for emergencies, at least that way I can get it filled and keep some at home. But oh no, goes against their ruddy protocols from the pharmacy team.

I have written to the chief pharmacist and got a definite no, I wrote back saying I have it all on record and should I get a clot or worse my family would sue!!
