Does anyone with Hughes syndrome have or had a biological parent that had polio?

I've read there may be a link between polio parents and their children having autoimmune disorders.

My father had polio and was paralyzed at first, but in time, got everything back.I am told he had it very bad.

I can't say exactly what site I read it on but I found it by a google search of "children of polio parents". There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information out there so that is why I posted the question here. My dad contracted polio in 1953 and then had 3 children and all three of us have autoimmune problems:(

My mother had Rubella as a child if that's any link? I have Hughes confirmed after recurrent miscarriages.

Interesting - yes my Dad had polio as a young man and was paralysed for a few months.

Hi, I don't have a parent/relative with Polio, but I was diagnosed as a baby in 1948. Don't know if there is any connection - nobody has ever said there was one. Had lots of health problems (read my profile) and in 2011 was diagnosed with Post Polio Syndrome, APS and other issues

If you do find a connection I would love to hear about it

I'm sorry you have had so many health problems. My dad was born in 1947 and was in an iron lung for more than a year starting in 1953. He was paralyzed across his body so he ended up with one shorter and weaker arm and leg and had use of only 1 lung. At any rate, I believe there is a connection between having at least some autoimmune disorders and certain viruses our parents may have had and/or ones we contracted as children perhaps. If I ever get to the bottom of it, I will be sure to let everyone know:-) Good luck to you...

I was very similar to your dad, in an iron lung for a while and having one leg shorter. I wore built up shoe then for a number of years but unfortunately my mother decided I didn't need it.Of course this left me with major hip problems too! My father and his 8 siblings and parents all passed over from one or other form of cancer, as did my sister. My mother had Parkinson's and thyroid problems all her life - not sure if any of those things contributed but out of four girls I am the only one to have this problem with the Polio.

I am a polio survivor with PPS. I research a lot but have never come across this. I do know polio is a cruel jokster as I seem to have many, many health issues.

I am trying to wrap my mind around the virus causing a mutation in a genetic marker. You have sparked my interest.

To those who do not agree with immunization..I will change bodies with you for a years time. I chose only a year because only polio survivors have had to grow up with a "be tough" mentality to health and I don't think you could take it. Then I will ask where you stand.
