Newly diagnosed with Hep C

Hello guys..

I went for a routine blood test around 8 weeks ago which showed raised ALT. Repeat tests showed raised ALT as well (110).

Had a USG 4 weeks ago which came back normal.

Further blood tests showed active Hepatitis C. I had a call from GP today with the results and was told I have been referred to hepatology.

I am really scared as I dont know how long have I had this virus in me. It could well go back to couple of decades when I had a blood transfusion!!

Anyway got to deal with this now.

I asked GP for a genotype testing but was told only specialists could order such detailed tests!! I was hoping if it was done by GP they could get on with treatment by the time I get to see the specialist!!

Does anyone know how long the typical waiting list is for hepatology appointment?

Hi acidiceleo, sorry you've had no replies (I cleared the virus 6 years ago so hardly ever visit this page anymore) I hope you have found answers you seek, if you had a blood transfusion that will most certainly be were you contracted the virus, same happened to me but I had problems proving it as all my medical history had been destroyed, get hold of any medical documentation you can which confirms a blood transfusion. The good news now is that Hep C treatment is easier, quicker and with fewer side effects and a higher success rate with all geno types then previously. If you haven't already please make contact with the Hep C trust help line, they were a brilliant help to me. Good luck

Thanks a lot Tess for your kind and reassuring reply.

I am glad that you managed to clear the virus.

I had a GT test and it came back as 5.

I have an appointment with hepatology in couple of weeks and hope to get treated.

Fingers crossed.

Hi Acidicleo, I hope your treatment was successful.

Can you please tell me how long the process took from diagnosis to treatment was?

Thanks

Hi tess, did you manage to get your proof of transfusion? I got mine with the help of a very nice lady on reception at the GP surgery. Doctor no help whatsoever! I was diagnosed July 2020 and got the all clear December 2020 following 12 weeks of treatment. As I have got cirrhosis I am now receiving financial support. Small consolation, but at least I have been able to give up work and try to enjoy whatever time I have left.Take care
