I'm wondering where people look for their dietary guidance? Why do you like them, and what do they teach?

Who/where do you go for reliable dietary advice?
Personally I've used a naturopath in the past but generally confident about diet since I'm completing a 3yr nutrition course.
Also have online favourites eg Chris Kresser.
That sounds really interesting how do you like the course?
Do you find different course members interpret the course differently? Or do they just encourage your own research? I've always been curious what it's like on the inside, as I know two nutritionists who went through the same course, and they seem to have almost polar opposite opinions about diet (at least on some topics, not all).
I saw a nutritionist many years ago. I use an app called PlateJoy. You can choose a number of options and it gives you recipes and a shopping list. Most people use it to learn.
I am using Noom. It relies on a whole education program to teach you what your body is doing and gives you tricks. I would spend about 10 min a day on it. There is a UK competitor that I can’t remember the name of.
I read articles in NYT, webmd and other reliable places. The same rules apply for those articles as for other misinformation. You need to read with a critical eye and cross check. Studies can be biased or insufficient. Over time that gets easier.
Dietdoctor.com and Dr Mark Hyman or Dr Eric Berg on Facebook or YouTube.
I suspected diet doctor would get a mention somewhere
Am I right Dr Hyman wrote the Pegan diet? I quite liked his take on healthy eating when he explained that one.
Hi Cooper. Sometimes I look at a question and turn it around in my head . For example you ask where do I go for reliable dietary advice? In my experience it's actually more important for me to recognise who to NOT go to for dietary advice.
Your initial question left me thinking about where I get my advice from and after thinking about it for a while I decided that it was 1) shared experience on my "home" forum as I have learned so much from those before me, 2) my specialist medical team and associated Drs 3) the diet my mother brought me up on (mother knows best)!
But when I flipped the question and asked myself who I would avoid getting dietary advice from I could instantly answer it. It was basically anyone who told me that a diet could "cure" me, anyone who had their own agenda or fixation including people who make claims that "all AI disease is caused by bad diet," which I have seen posted on other HU forums, and anyone who starts with, "my friends aunts cousins had that and they came off all their meds by drinking green smoothies."
Everyones health condition and needs are different and unique so it's best to take everything I read with a pinch of salt and look at it with an open mind.
I think that there is a wealth of information out there, some good some bad. I am so grateful that I have access to the internet and get to look and learn about other peoples experience and share things on forums like HU. In the days before the internet what did people do? You can hardly look up the same level of information in an encyclopedia. I feel for those people who had health problems and solely had to rely on a local GP before the days of the world wide web.
I do think it is important to be mindful of healthy eating. In my experience any food that is processed or of a junk type nature just makes me feel terribly hungover. Crisps, sweets, chocolate and cake just don't enter my house as I've always been a savory girl.
I enjoy food and cooking and that is why I like the healthy eating forum so I can eat (when I can) for pleasure.
I have to admit, and this is my own view, that when some people analyse everything that they eat to a cellular level, unless it is to stick to a strict diet in relation to a serious health issue, I find it takes the pleasure away from it a bit for me. That's my own view and others may differ and I respect that.
I just want to eat healthily because I've never been over weight and it makes me feel rough if I eat rubbish. Fresh, well reared food has the best taste in my opinion. And I can't wait to be able to eat a little more again soon.
Disclaimer: Although I say I never eat cake, Happyman4s recent chocolate cake did look rather delicious and I would have happily had a slice with some raspberries!😂😂😂
Online studies. Medical doctors such as Dr Berg, Dr Hyman, Dr Oz and Dr Sanjay. Weston Price, Isabella Wentz, Chris Kresser and Mary Shamom's website. A select few naturopaths online. My doctor. HU has been a wealth of info for learning about peer to peer experiences, especially the thyroid forum where we are over 100,000 strong.
^ Everything is researched with a critical eye and if its convincing I try.
That's unfortunate for your mum I presume it was T2 diabetes?
