I'm curious what others out there drink (especially when out or at the pub)?

About the same time I started eating healthier, I dramatically cut back on alcohol. So I usually have low or non alcohol beer (luckily there are now some really tasty ones).

I sometimes have wine but have a glass of water at the same tine, so I drink the wine slower.

And I also have some of the vegan baileys a friend got me for my birthday :)

Hi Cooper27

I tend to eat a meal when I'm out in a pub, and I'd drink a small glass of red wine and some tap water alongside.

I don't drink much alcohol at all - probably 1 to 2 units per week. Red wine mostly.

Hi Cooper27 I usually only go to a pub for family meals out, and I'm also usually the driver so I drink bottled water!

Very occasionally if I'm not driving I will have a glass of wine, white or red, but one is enough, I'll have water as well.

I don't drink often - at most twice month, at home I buy those miniature bottles of wine which is two small glasses. It's not so much a health decision, and I like the taste, it's more that even a small amount of alcohol will make me feel tired and sluggish the next day. I don't want to feel like that at work and my days off work are too precious to waste feeling groggy!

No alcohol for over 44 years for me. Never developed a taste for it. Water is best for health and by now everyone I know knows that I don't drink, so there's never any pressure. Probably not what you wanted to hear. :)

All feedback is welcome :)

For me, I'm just curious what people have when out, because pubs don't tend to like you just ordering tap water :)

That's partly why I buy bottled, but also in my area the tap water tastes awful, I buy bottled water to drink at home for when I just want plain water. Love it when I go to Wales, their tap water tastes lovely!

If it is to watch the calories you could try gin and slimline tonic...a lot less calories than a glass of wine.

There are so many good choices of non alcoholic drinks on the market now. I didn't drink much anyway so when I was diagnosed with heart problems it was easy to give up. A word of warning though. There can be a lot of caffeine and aspartame (artificial sweetener - Google it to see how bad it is for you!) in soft drinks so read the label before you buy!

Well you've pretty much hit on why I'm asking - the dreaded aspartame! I don't do beer, and have to limit sulphites (wine), but that leaves soft drinks, which all contain aspartame these days... So I'm curious what others choose :)

The fever tree range are really good. Especially the Ginger Beer and Sicilian Lemonade.

Fentemans also do drinks with nothing artificial in them.

The bigger supermarkets stock these and so do dome Garden Centres.

Unfortunately pubs and restaurants only seem to get as exciting as J20.

Hi Copper27,

I don't drink alcohol and feel great for that, I prefer squeaky clean coffee shops to pubs being a coeliac. 😊

I gave up drinking in October when my symptoms started and not long before diagnosis. I don’t miss it and I always thought I would. I drink bottled or tap water and a cup of chamomile tea. We tend to go out during the week now as it’s quieter and as we are driving, my husband gave up drinking too and we radically changed our diet to as much whole foods and organic as we can, we do cheat sometimes with a chicken dish and have salmon about twice a week. I’m getting better at veg burgers and falafel balls now x we have avoided going out with friends that drink as I think that would be hard, not because we would want a drink but because it’s hard to be sober around drunk people xx ha ha

Some friends who drink don't understand why you don't want alcohol and keep trying to persuade you to have something. I stick to Becks Blue or the new Peroni non alcohol lager then at least it looks like I have something to appease them!

I once got "drunk" on about six bottles of becks blue :) great thing was at the end of the evening my drinking companions were struggling to stand up or speak in coherent sentences, but I was doing fine :)

Becks blue is definitely not my favourite though, lucikily the range of low/no alcohol beers is increasing.

I have had to give up drinking for long periods before, once at university. I'm not too fussed about not drinking, but think a lot of people treat you differently when they perceive you've chosen to give up alcohol. I've noticed that people are very careful to ensure that those who can't drink for religious reasons are included, but they don't make the same accommodations if you can't give them a good excuse for staying sober. A health kick isn't a good excuse, medication isn't a good excuse.

I will have half a pint of real ale, but often just drink some of it. (If there is a vegan beer I will choose that but I don't beat myself up if there is no vegan beer. They are coming...) Then water, and often just water. I'll have a glass of bubbly to help celebrate a birthday etc. Once in a while I will have a small glass of whisky at the end of an evening, max once every three months say.
