Eating with braces

Hello,

I just got my braces on today. 😞 I can’t seem to get myself to eat because of the way it feels. I tear my sandwich into small bites, but I just can’t seem to get myself to eat with the way my braces feel. Any advice on how to eat normally with braces?

It sounds pretty standard for your teeth to feel weird at first! Maybe try some soft foods like soups to ease yourself in?

Hi TacoCat25 ,

Did your Orthodontist say what you can and can't have after the braces were put on? Did you get a list before leaving their office? :-)

They gave me a list. Not on what to eat RIGHT after though

What is on the list they gave you? :-)

Yogurt, chopped up foods, smoothies, Mac and cheese, and icecream/shaved ice

Can you use yogurt and soft fruit mixed together to do a fruit and yogurt parfait for dinner?

I’ll try that. Thanks for the idea!

You're welcome! Please let us know how it works out. You may want to also try soft cottage cheese and more soft fruits. :-)

You will get used to them very quickly but things like sandwiches, apples and hard things you need to bite into will have to be cut up or they will get stuck in your braces or can cause the brackets to come off. It’s surprising how quickly you will forget they are there, don’t worry! Then when you get them off it will feel weird!

Yeah. I tried cutting it into smaller pieces, but with the glue at the back and my teeth not being able to close as far as they used to makes it really weird. I hope I can start getting used to them as quickly as you say . Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi TacoCat25,

It’s quite uncomfortable at the beginning for sure. I think a nice glass of smoothie or a protein shake will make you feel good right now. 😋

Hope you feel better soon. 😊🙏🌺

Good morning. I had braces for a long while when I was younger. When you first have them in and just after they are tightened it's a case of slow and steady. Don't try to eat at a normal speed, soups and soft fruit are your friend! I also found that bread got stuck to my braces which was the worst feeling in the world! This may sound gross but wash and moisturise around your lips and chin regularly, for the first week or so I was drooling when I slept which made my skin very red and sore. You'll get used to it <3

Yeah, the bread in my braces did feel nasty. And thanks for the advice about the drooling problem, it’s happening a lot right now.

I would like to bet your braces are not as clumsy as uncomfortable as mine in the 60's. They work, so persevere with them, it takes time, but it will be worth it in the end.
