Daily food choices are essential to support energy levels and ways of being. There are three groups of food – Positive Pranic, Neutral Pranic, and Negative Pranic. Positive Pranic food ignites life energy within. Neutral Pranic food doesn’t do much, really, other than making you lethargic. Negative Pranic food takes away your life energy away.
Food is a basic physical need that all living creatures have. Food is fuel and building material for our bodies. The kind of food we eat plays a significant role in the way our body looks and functions. Food can make us happy, energetic, sluggish, satisfied, jittery, sleepy… you name it… Quite a powerful thing a portion of food is! And you are in charge of it.
Let me ask you a question. What do you do when your car runs out of gas? You go to a gas station and fuel it, right? Immediately after, you are confidently driving out, ready to take on a trip. Would it make sense if right after fueling, a car has to stay put for a couple of hours because it went into a “gas coma”?
Similarly, after fueling our bodies, we should be able to take on the day with vigor and joy, right? Isn’t that what we all are striving for? Instead, many of us descend into a “food coma.” And then we need coffee, tea, and other stimulants to pick ourselves up and go on with the day. Sadly, a lot of people take it as a fact of life and an inevitable state of being.

Vegetables
This food group includes pretty much most of the vegetables (except potatoes, tomatoes, garlic, onion, eggplant).
Fruits and berries
All the fruits and berries (fresh and dry varieties) are considered to be highly pranic.
Whole grains
Whole grains like rice, buckwheat, barley, millet, oats, teff, spelt, etc. provide exceptional nourishment. It is advised for all grains to be soaked or sprouted prior to cooking and recommended to be consumed within 3 hours after cooking (if possible).
Legumes
This category includes mung beans, lentils, yellow split peas, chickpeas, beans, organic tofu, etc. Just like grains, they should be soaked or sprouted before cooking. When legumes are combined with whole grains, they can be offered as a complete protein source.
Nuts, seeds, and oils
Raw nuts and seeds are preferred. They can be used in smaller amounts if slightly roasted. It is better for digestion if you can soak nuts and seeds before consumption. The most popular varieties are peanuts, hemp seeds, chia seeds, coconuts, pine nuts, walnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, and flax seeds. Almonds must be soaked for at least 8 hours and then skinned before eating them. The brown color almond peel contains tannin acid, which is an enzyme inhibitor.
As to oils, all of them have to be high quality and cold-pressed. Red palm oil is considered to be highly pranic. Most oils should be consumed raw, but some of them like ghee, sesame oil, palm oil, and coconut oil you can use in cooking with heat.
Sweeteners
It’s best to use raw and unfiltered honey, jaggery, and dates. You should never cook honey or place it in boiling water. It should be consumed cold or mixed with warm water (no higher than 40°C (104°F)).
Neutral Pranic
Neutral Pranic foods list is tiny. It consists of tomatoes and potatoes. This food doesn’t do much, really, other than make you lethargic and you sleep more. Personally, I eat it seldom at dinner time. But if you have joints problems or swelling in your legs it’s better to avoid neutral pranic food group.
Negative Pranic
Negative Pranic food takes away your life energy. It’s diminishing our ability to perceive and dulls our neves system.
This food group contains stimulants and sedative foods.
Nervous Stimulants like coffee, tea, processed sugars, induce mental restlessness and destroy stamina in the long run.
Sedative foods are meats, fish, eggs, onions, hot peppers, garlic, scallions, leeks, chives, alcohol, eggplant. According to Yogic culture, they are harmful to either mind or body. Harmful to the mind means that the substance leads to the duller, less refined states of consciousness. Harmful to the body means that it will cause detrimental stress to any physical organ, directly or indirectly (via any physical imbalance).
Positive Pranic Fundamentals
Positive pranic food is nourishing, easily digestible, flavourful, and contains only ingredients beneficial for health. The methods of food preparation, as well as the emotional and mental state of a person making it, holds the same importance as the ingredients. For me, cooking was never a chore, rather an opportunity for a beautiful offering, a creative outlet, an expression of love and appreciation.
Lastly, the most essential part of the meal is in the way you consume it. The way you receive your meal, how conscious you are, the level of your appreciation in a lot of ways will determine the way digestion happens in this miraculous body of yours.
Above all, we should enjoy the food we eat without being paranoid about the calorie count or the number of carbs, fats, or whatever the latest dietary fad is. A healthy relationship with food is essential, so enjoy it fully without hesitation. The harm of stress during eating is far more damaging to your system than any ingredient ever could be.
