I’m approaching my 50s and tried my first Tofu this evening. I fried some then added to a Thai Red Curry.
I’m on the fence ha ha. I’m trying to cut out meat as much as I can. Should I persevere? Ha ha 😂

I don't eat a lot of meat but I can't stand tofu. I don't see the point in substitutes.
If you miss the chewy texture or the flavour, using eggs, olives, halloumi or the more chewy varieties of mushrooms might be a good way forward.
I don't mind tofu, but tofu just doesn't like me unfortunately, so I suppose you're lucky you can eat it
I think how you cook it can make quite a difference - if you want to persevere, then try an alternative cooking technique.
Hi Hidden
I'm not a big fan of tofu either - although I did make this 'Spicy Tofu Kedgeree' once, and it was quite tasty:

It sounds tasty in a Thai Red Curry!
Zest
The curry always goes down a treat, my mistake maybe wasn’t marinating the tofu after pressing it. Will try it again with a tikka masala next
I can only tolerate it in very small amounts, and even then it gives me GI upset. When I first tried it I was hoping to help with hot flashes, as I am now 51, but all it did was give me the runs and lots of cramping. I avoid it now.
I used a small amount, seem to be ok this morning, so far at least ha ha
Hi HealthBuddyMelissa have you tried unsweetened soya milk for hot flashes? I used it and still do as I like the taste. I drink it by the glass as part of my diet for calcium intake my bones. I have used it in hot drinks but the water needs to have cooled, so off the boil, or it will curdle.
I switched to oat milk a few weeks ago, that’s a staple in breakfast and hot drinks now
Oat milk is just ok for me
I used to quietly laugh and frown at those at work who advocated everyone start using oat milk. Now I’m a convert 🤦🏻
I don't tolerate soy well at all, but I have tried soy milk and I just don't care for it. Almond milk is OK, but no soy milk. I find if I control carb intake it helps a lot more than anything else I have tried, specifically sugars. I am not completely sure what the correlation is, but it is working.
Hello Hidden I wouldn’t give up just because you didn’t like tofu, I don’t eat meat or tofu so I’d check out our vegetarian topics.

It depends why you are cutting out meat and what choices you make when eating meat. 🌈👍
Thank you
I was having chicken or beef mince with every weekday evening meal.
But during lockdown some things were harder to get hold of and I got diagnosed with high blood pressure, so I wanted to change my lifestyle, more exercise, etc
I’m looking to use beef mince once a week then some chicken dishes but I thought of tofu as another option otherwise my meals are full of pulses.
I’m not a fan of tofu. I find that chicken quorn is good in Thai curry’s if you want to avoid meat.
Quorn products always seem to be out of stock where I am
Try marinating it with ginger, garlic and chilli. It can be too bland without any marinade. You can buy it already marinated.
Yeah I think that was my mistake not doing that beforehand
It's soya, whatever name they put on it. I personally am intolerant of the stuff so i never eat it. I did in my younger days, before I discover what it did to my digestion. If it's ok for you and you can make it faste good then why not persist?
Thank you, I’ll give it a go ha ha
Good luck. It's truly hideous. Just don't eat meat or substitutes. No need
I used to have it in sandwiches (when I ate bread). I used to really press it and slather it in marmite with salad, lovely - honest. It definitely does need drying out and a good marinade to work. I’ve even “scrambled” it too.
Sounds like you did the correct process of pressing it first to remove excess water, but it is best marinated so the flavours have time to soak in. I really like Taifun brand smoked tofu. Unlike some other smoked tofu the flavour goes all the way through. You can buy it online from Ocado or the Vegan Kind supermarket, and my local Waitrose normally has it in stock - I like the Almond and sesame seed version. It's great sliced in sandwiches or chunks in a salad or stir fry.
Noted will try and get some
I love tofu. It's very versatile. The trick is to get all the water out and to marinate it well. I grill it or scramble it and I don't use oil. There are various brands and they all taste different. I have my favourite. Silken tofu makes really good puddings too. I also use tempeh or seitan to add to veg dishes especially Asian food. The Bosh boys are a good source of ideas.
I used some in a tikka masala and marinated the tofu in a masala/spice/yogurt mix definitely better than straight in. Definitely think marinade is the way 👍
