Feeling drugged and dizzy after eating dessert

Feeling drugged and dizzy

Last night I ate 4 small portions of dessert. Within 10 minutes I felt a bit unbalanced. Then I felt quite drugged and couldn't walk straight. I felt a bit sick in the tummy and went to bed. I woke up in the night still a bit wobbly, what could cause this?

Possibly postprandial hyperglycemia.

You may be prediabetic, but this won't be spotted with a blood test until you are already well into T2D territory. If you're eating a "healthy" high-carb low-fat diet, I'd ease up on the carbs (especially the desserts!) and add some healthy amounts of fat back to your meals. Read up on Dr David Unwin's recommendations for his diabetic patients. You can get similar information from phcuk.org/.

Would agree with this with my n=1 experience, sugary things made me feel like this prior to my prediabetes diagnosis in jan 2019. If this is the case for you then best to find out now as you have a better chance of doing something about it. I got my blood sugars back into the healthy range by a combination of losing 2 stone of excess weight, avoiding added sugars and reducing carbs to small portions of high fibre ones. I don’t know if GPs are doing routine testing at the moment but might be worth you asking for an HbA1c test which gives you a “summary” of your blood sugars over the preceding 3 months.

Even if you’re not prediabetic this still sounds like it could be reactive hypoglycaemia and maybe your body is just not handling that amount of dessert. Whether or not you can get a test you can start cutting out added sugars as no one actually needs them and think about having e.g. a slice of good cheese to round off your evening meal if that’s what you like to do. Or if you really want something sweeter try fresh berries with some cream or full fat plain yoghurt, or a couple of squares of very dark chocolate.

If you continue to get these symptoms then definitely contact your Dr. just in case the dessert was coincidental to another reason for the symptoms.
