Milk

Hi folks,

My friend has made her own alternative milks. There's 3 different kinds of oat milk at the moment.

Now when she was in the process of getting these milks out there she was boasting how these milks are 100% natural/organic, fairtrade and use no plastic and has no additives like vegetable oil or rapeseed oil also it uses filtered water, which all sounds very good.

Well, today I managed to get my hands on a bottle and there is oat in it, but only 13% oats and there is vegetable lecithin in it also.

So, it’s not really 100% oats is it and if it has vegetable lecithin in it, then it’s not 100% organic either... well I don’t think it is.

I normally buy Oatly organic oat milk which does use 100% oats and sea salt and no other additives. The only thing is, I don’t know if these are fairtrade oats and they do use plastic packaging. Also, if you order the milks online then you are going to get a lot of plastic with the packaging.

It might be recyclable plastic, but this doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Recyclable plastic can still end up in the ocean if not handled correctly.

So it makes me think, You want to bring an alternative milk to the table that you boast as being 100% natural/organic, no additives and no plastic which is your initial plan which sounds like an excellent idea, but I then find out that it’s not quite what I thought.

Are there certain rules the food industry want you to fulfill by adding certain ingredients or adding plastic waste?

In other words, it kind of sounds like something that is all good, then you must add something bad or reasonably bad to it.

That is how it seems to me anyhow.

Hi Matt2584 ,

This is something to think about the next time wanting milk or any type of item. Thank you for bringing this up. :-)

Hi Matt2584

You mentioned having Oatly organic oat milk - do you put that in your teas and coffees, or use it on breakfast cereals, or something else?

Zest :-)

Hi Zest.

I put the oat milk into my coffee and I put it int my cereal and I also use it in my avocado puddings I make at the weekends.

I do drink tea but I mainly drink herbal/fruit teas so no need for milk for me :).

I actually said that Oatly organic oat milk uses 100% oats. It does not. Sorry, that was my assumption kicking in there :).

They actually use 10% of oats, water and sea salt.

Anyhow, I tried my friends oat milk and it tasted just like tap water.

When I compare that to Oatly oat milk, I prefer Oatly.

All milk comes in some sort of container. From my research oat and hemp milk are the most environmentally friendly from the point of view of land use, water consumption and use of pesticides etc. Those are the ones I use.

Yes, I’ve read a few things about what alternative milk is the best due to the amount of water used.

Almond milk uses a lot of water to make and it tastes foul as well :).
