I would go with coconut oil if you need similar physical characteristics. Olive oil if you just need a cooking oil. Both of those are grown more-or-less organically. If you can afford it, ben oil (moringa oil) is an excellent cooking oil and is always organic.
Whatever you may have heard to the contrary, most palm oil isn't grown in destroyed rainforests. Some of it certainly is, but mostly it's grown in an agroforestry configuration on less ecologically-sensitive land. There's a simple reason for this: rainforest land has low fertility and poor transport access. As I described in another post, palm oil is probably more environmentally-friendly than Canola. You can get unrefined palm oil that's certified organic.
Bear in mind that ALL conventional agriculture involves destruction of animal habitats and killing of animals, not to mention unpleasant socio-political impacts on humans. Avoid, for example, coconut oil grown in the Philippines, which has industry rules designed to keep coconut farmers in grinding poverty.
The vegan's impact on animal life and ecology is essentially the same as a meat-eater's. If you wish to "treat lightly on the earth", it's a little more complicated than just avoiding animal products. I recommend looking around your local area for market gardeners, who usually grow "organically" but aren't certified as such. They often sell direct to the public, relying on word-of-mouth advertising.
Hi Sharon, coconut oil and olive oil are great alternatives as the awful toad suggests, I avoid palm oil as its a natural laxative and my body doesn't like it. It's also a saturated fat...
no need to use oil at all, just empty calories. See ForksoverKnives site for recipes without oil. plenty of good oil in flax seeds and many other things
