I'm quitting alcohol for at least the next year

I decided to quit alcohol for at least the next year. I've said this on here before and then went back on my promise to myself and ended up drinking again. Alcohol makes my health ten times worse and is the main culprit in my bad health so i have to have the self-discipline to quit for at least a year. It's not that i drink too much. I would usually drink like 5-10 beers every 2-3 weeks on average but the way it affects my health is like i'm drinking 10 beers a day yet i find it extremely difficult to stop drinking even though i know it harms me. So i guess in a way that is alcoholism? I said it to my family and they were saying "oh you don't even drink that much so you're being silly" or something along those lines. It's hurtful and demotivates me. I guess it's because they don't fully understand my situation. I'm writing this on here in hope that i can get some motivation to do this and stick to it.

Hi healthiskey ,

First of all, you’re doing the right thing. Sorry to hear that your family isn’t supportive. We know you can do it! Giving up on something that can be harmful to your health is a great start. The second step is to make sure that your family sees how hard you are going to work to reach the goal of quitting drinking all alcoholic drinks. Please let us know more with updates soon.

I think it's because i haven't explained it to them all properly. My parents know and are supportive about it.

I’m sure you have told the family, but they have to let it sink in. My Dad’s side of the family can’t understand my health issues still and I am 37 years old!😀

Have you thought about going gluten free for a few months just to see how you feel? That would eliminate beer and whiskey and it would also give you an excuse when someone is needling you about having a drink. It takes some research because gluten is in a lot of food. If you are gluten insensitive it would explain why drinking makes you feel so bad.

I have tried gluten free before but only for like a month at most. I don't think gluten is the main culprit since i can have bread no problem but alcohol is a different story.

I nearly got addicted to booze when i had bad depression a few years ago. I decided on the spur of the moment to give up meds, go vegan, and become teetotal at the same time. You can do it! Have faith! 💪💪💪

Good on you! Thanks for the comment.

May sound silly but it may help to find a healthier vice that you can turn to when you crave booze. Eg fruit, veg, salads, chocolates or maybe even exercise the craving off? Hope it works out for you. 🙏

Yeah i think i'm going to be a bit less restrictive with my diet and allow myself junk food sometimes because it doesn't affect me nearly as badly as alcohol so it will be a good replacement until i can get over the alcohol cravings.

Hi I quit drinking alcohol 14 years ago. I was drinking a 12 pack of beer a day! I started walking everyday. It has made a huge difference in my health. If I could do it I know you can! You don’t drink nearly as much as I did! I wish you luck on your journey.

That's great to hear i'm glad you were able to get over that hurdle. I don't drink half as much as you did but it effects me pretty badly when i do drink.

Good luck, & don't let anyone pressure you into doing anything you're not comfortable with.

There must be suport groups on HU, the internet, or local to where you live. It's easier doing something when you have the help of people who are going through, or have gone through this.

You're right... it's not easy to go it alone.

Well done to you, it takes a lot to share your story with people so you must praise yourself for doing that.

I am following a Programme called 'The Thrive Programme' as I have Emetophobia (fear of being sick) and I have read through the book once and am now going back through the book and repeating exercises which I've done before - you are supposed to do this when following the Programme. Even though the book I have is for Emetophobia it also touches on other things like addictions i.e. smoking. The Programme works on your mind and changes the way you think but says that you are not addicted, we don't have addictions as it's our mind then convinces us that we can't give things up. It may be a good idea for you to have a look at this Programme as it covers a lot and it may help you - here is the link below:

Once again, well done for talking about it on here, you are one step closer to giving up.

Take care
