Hi me23

I am also trying to lose weight so appreciate how hard it can be to adjust your diet at the beginning.

First of all: make sure you are eating enough. If your body does not have enough fuel you won't be able to exercise efficiently and your metabolism will slow down and become sluggish. The NHS suggests this should be around 1400 cals per day for women and 1900 cals per day for men, though this number is fairly arbitrary as each person's calorie needs are unique and are influenced by many factors including height, weight, metabolism, and activity levels. You need to work at a level that suits YOU and then stick to it.

Secondly: Eat little and often. It takes time for the stomach to adjust to smaller portion sizes, so you are likely to feel hungry between meals. Plan to have three regular sized meals per day, plus at least one smaller snack in between each meal. Make sure you eat at least every 3 hours throughout the day to keep the hunger pangs at bay

Thirdly, and this is a personal preference, have you considered decreasing your carbohydrate intake in favour of slightly higher levels of fat and protein? I found that low fat/ high carb diets do not work for me as I get sugar drops between meals and feel hungry all the time. I am not talking some extreme ketogenic diet, but a slight shift in macro nutrients away from carbs and towards protein. I eat a diet that is 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat and this seems to work for me. To be honest, so long as you create a calorie deficiency, you are going to lose weight, even if all you eat is a stick of butter per day. Again, find out what works for YOU.

Hope this helps. good luck with your weight loss x

thank you cathalicious as I think eating every 3 hours will keep me full before I go too hungry and crave for food and end up having large portions.

Knowing my calories and adjusting my diet accordingly helped a lot. It also helped to find things to keep my mind occupied so I didn't think about food all the time.

Hi, try slow releasing carbohydrates that will keep you fuller for longer. Sometimes it's just eating the right foods at the right time of day. Water does also help, how much are you drinking? I'd say 1-3 litres a day minimum. A good trick is to drink a large glass of water before eating as sometimes we are thirsty and not hungry. I've also learnt, a lot of eating is habit, if we can break the cycle in our head, it then translates to our daily eating. Good luck!

Divert your mind a bit, if that helps. If you've had a complete meal and in between you feel an urge to eat. Engage yourself in an activity that entertains you.

It helps if its a physical activity or an indoor game. I find snooker a relaxing outlet to my sudden urges. The game completely takes my mind off of any other activity, as the game is itself mentally challenging apart from the technical prowess.

I think from my experience, indulge in an activity that involves your brain and thought process completely.
