Hi all, Iv joined recently and have been reading yr interesting helpful posts.
Had SAH last April, similar issues now to alot of you here. They found another Aneurysm which I am being 'actively monitored' for, recovery going well, back at work, however have been getting clear nasal fluid occasionally since brain surgery and every morning keep needing to clear my throat? Surgeon has told me to send sample of fluid to GP. Anyone else had this?
I certainly have Joanna. Since a SAH in 2011 I've seen my GP, neurologist and ENT doctors many times about constant sinus issues/runny nose, and having to 'growl' before I speak ! The only treatments they've come up with so far are antihistamines, steroid nasal spray and Stérimar sea salt nasal spray. They help a little but not enough.
It all seems quite hit & miss when a specific problem isn't detected, but hopefully a sample will reveal the key to your issue so you can have effective treatment. I'd be interested to hear how you get on !

Thanks Cat lovely to speak to you, thats interesting what you said about runny nose? did u ever worry it could be CSF? I was with the National Hospital for my hospital stay and they have now suggested about the CSF which I suppose they have to rule it out? Made me giggle when u said you growl! lol Wow 10 years since your SAH. I bet you have some stories and a wealth of information to share, I feel so blessed to have this community of people of similar health issues. Thanks for yr reply Cat its much appreciated. Jo x
Never thought about CSF and no one has ever suggested it. But after looking online, although there are links such as tinnitus, poor balance, intolerance of noise/light and loss of smell/taste, there are many more symptoms of CSF leakage which don't apply to me so maybe that's why it's never been considered ?
I will mention it once GPs surgeries are back up and running, but I'd still like to hear how you get on after test results are completed ! 😏

Hi my csf leaked through my nose which had been fractured along with my forehead which allowed it to come through I was given a lumber drain but that was in my early days of accident so don't worry if it is it's easily sorted and didn't cause any issues for me

I had nasal fluid and was worried it was a csf leak but I think it was a side effect from Keppra

When was your SAH? How does it affect you now?
My SAH wasn't due to an aneurysm I had an accident at my sons I had other brain haemorrhages too and a mass of haematomas I was in a medically induced coma but I have come out of it pretty well compared to others I have memory issues,tinnitus ,balance issues I have learnt how to work around my issues and I'm just glad to be alive

I haven't had the main condition but I have cerebrospinal fluid leaking coming out through nostril and down throat. It causes coughing, wheezing and crackling at night for me, as well as fluid running from nose day and night. CSF is a clear, salty tasting watery fluid. Your surgery should be able to do an initial test on the fluid by looking for glucose. If that's positive it doesn't guarantee that it's CSF so they should arrange a Tau test. This is straightforward too. They take a blood test and collect a sample of the dripping fluid (hopefully you can just drip it into a sterile container) and send off to a lab. If that's positive then they should arrange further investigation, probably by ENT. Tau test is the norm for suspected CSF and they're just testing for a protein only present in CSF.
