MCT Oil

Hai, I'm Catherine (user names were gone so I just typed whatever worked).

I've been "skulking" around here since I gave myself a concussion in November. I stay quiet cause I don't really think I have much to offer folk on here... there are folk worse off than me and "it's only a concussion" (...that's what I keep telling myself, sorry... I'm trying not to but it's so damn hard when there is literally NO help out there to show me a way to wade through the chaos of this concussion. It seems not very important in the scheme of things) but ...realising it has had a devastating impact on my life over the last three months.

ANYWAY, I was wondering if anyone has any experience of MCT Oil? I'm giving it a go to hopefully improve the energy my brain has to recover a bit better (and quicker). I must say I defo have more mental clarity and an energy burst after I drink it that's for sure. Thanks.

This isn't something I've ever heard of Catherine, not even here on Headway. But I hope the oil continues to benefit you. Maybe you'll post an update in another week or two on any further progress.

By the way, concussion is taken seriously as a type of brain injury, so 'Just concussion' isn't something you can expect to see here any time soon. And It's still early days for you, so there's scope for more improvement, especially with the help of your MCT ! Regards, Cat x

Hai Cat,

Thank you for your reply. MCT Oil is popular mixed with coffee and grassfed butter known as Bulletproof Coffee. I wasn't heading down the route of "bulletproof coffee" more interested in MCT Oil on it's own. It releases ketones which "The brain can use and may even prefer to use as an alternative source of energy when glucose availability is low (for example in the aging brain) or when the metabolism of glucose in the brain via glycolysis is impaired following brain injury."- medium.com/lifeomic/lifeomi...

(There is a lot more information out there and there may be some issues if a diabetic with using MCT Oil but I'm not).

I had fasted often before I hit my head but have been unable to since (it causes a horrible headache and panic now). I also do...did CrossFit. I am changing my routine to accomodate my new concussion friend not enjoying any physical exertion yet ...and eating at 5 in the morning before I do my little bit is not my idea of fun so I thought I would try MCT Oil with my hemp protein. It defo cleared up the fog and gave me an energy burst however yesterday morning (while fasting) I tried a bulletproof coffee after doing my little bit of static cycling and it was like someone had finally plugged me back in again. There was no headache, no panic, no crash and the clarity...flip n eck I was shocked with disbelief at my bodies response hence me searching for others experience. It wore off after about three hours but I would say it looks more promising as bulletproof coffee than with my hemp protein...I'll try them both to see what works best.

I must say it's terrible to wake up today with the optimism of yesterday gone replaced again by pain, heaviness and a lil sadness...no quick fix. Time for another bulletproof coffee...

I will defo post an update in a few weeks time after hopefully getting in to a new routine that allows me to maybe do a little bit of what I love doing, a lot! Thanks Cat.

Hi Catherine,

I am interested in MCT oil. i hope you don't get this, i was daignosed with exertional migraine and light induced moigraine, following a brain injury 14 years ago. before the BI i used to do a lot of hill walking and work full time in a gardening team.

I am interested in natural anti ifflamoraties, but have not tried any, because pain killers, like ibuprofen cause medication overuse headache, and rebound migraines etc. I have now stopped painkillers again and i have slightly lower levels of pain, and a bit less frequency and duration of migraines.

Hi Catherine,

I wonder what the name of the MCT is, and where you get the MCT oil?

Hai Amber,

Oh jeez that's awful... I'm sorry to hear that I've had migraines since I was a kid with no known trigger (did a whole bunch of trigger tests to come up with nothing) to my surprise I haven't had a migraine from I hit my head ...maybe I've knocked mine out of me, I can only hope. They are so debilitating. How long do yours last? I have visual anomalies that I think are maybe a migraine trying to start (I used to get blind spots and like revolving barcode auras in my left eye) but they have yet to amount to anything.

I know that turmeric is a natural anti inflammatory, I use it along side supergreens and hemp protein. I live in Northern Ireland and get the MCT Oil in my local health shop. It's called Mutant MCT Oil...the bottle doesn't really sell it to me at all to be honest (luckily I don't judge a book by its cover) but I do know that you can get it in Holland and Barrett too.
