Noise from hell.

Julesgettingthere profile image

Hello everyone, Jules here.

I have been struggling with noise and i seem to be getting worse with it.

But, i wondered if we are all sensitive to the same sort of noises ?

One of my noises from hell (where i cant do anything but wait until it stops) is :

the beer can crusher ...... It makes my head fill up with blood and my temper is difficult to hide.

I look at other people in the room and it seems really odd - they dont seem to hear it at all.

Does anyone else suffer with a partner who uses a beer can crusher in the house ?

Or another noise that makes them so distracted ?

Kindest regards

Jules

PS: weather here in Newcastle is sunny but windy but i am told very warm weather on the way. Hoping to have a picnic inn my garden.

I've never heard of a beer can crusher Jules ! The first thing I'd ask is.........is it really necessary ? I suppose I don't have beer cans to dispose of, but all other cans are rinsed and put straight into my black bin just as they are.

But I do empathise with noise intolerance generally. TV commercials have to be muted immediately and certain accompanying music in dramas/films makes me switch off. My own music's fine though.

Also the tannoy announcements in supermarkets can reduce me to an angry wreck. But what I call 'Tittle-Tattle', especially in waiting rooms, can bring me close to meltdown.

At my last appointment at the fracture clinic there were two loud-mouthed females discussing their personal lives, none-stop. It was so utterly banal and intrusive that I asked my pal to move me as far away as possible (I was in a wheelchair) but even then I could still hear them and my heart was thumping with frustration (& the desire to scream rude comments at the offenders). Should've remembered to take earplugs).

It can be a big problem after a BI and, it seems, a pretty common one. Do you have a garage or shed with mains power where Ren could move the crusher to, out of earshot ? I'm sure you can find a compromise between you m'love. I hope so !

The noise of those women talking doesnt seem to disappear with distance either does it - you become almost tuned in to it.

I worry about what i might be capable of in those situations, if it happened, say, at the end of a really bad day. I know what goes through my head and i wouldn't repeat it to anyone or they might take me away.

I first discovered my hate for the beer can crusher when my OT visited. It was uncanny, as, just when he had asked me how i was coping with noise, down came the crashing next door of beer cans. Funny now thou - as the OT just looked at me as i looked at him with a growl on my face. I think i said something like 'he just doesn't get it'.

I dont have the heart to ask him to move it elsewhere yet - he seems to really like using it. Must be a bloke thing.

Yes but surely he can enjoy it MORE in a space where he knows it isn't annoying anyone else !

I'm afraid I laughed at your remark about the timing of the can crusher being 'uncanny'. You must admit Jules that's quite funny ! ?

I can fully identify with forbidden ideas entering one's head in 'captive' situation (such as waiting rooms). I make no apologies for imagining GBH with a heavy object :o :x xx

Like you Jules certain noises makes me want to hurt someone, the vacuum cleaner is the worst, people "shouting" down their phones on the bus, and I have to wear earplugs when swimming and can only go to sessions with no children.

The acoustics in the swimming pool is very amplified and they insist on having piped music in there too, I left one day when a couple of women swam slowly up and down the pool and never shut up, I could have joined in their conversation from the other end of the pool.

I agree with all that Cat says too.

Hello Janet,

Yes, but something odd with the swimming pool noise with me. I cant stand the noise (as with you, the women chatting and the kids) but i found when i float with my ears under the water i get a feeling of absolute i think its solitude. Completely at rest with myself, and there is no noise at all, just a Protected feeling around my head.

I havent been for ages as there REALLY are too many kids and i am flustered before i get ton the changing room, which sort of spoils your day of peace doesn't it.

Hi Jules, you wouldn't be having a picnic here in the south - it's dismal, windy and chilly.

I have never heard of a beer can crusher! Do you think you might be extra sensitive to noise at the moment due to stress? As your hubbie to find a quieter way to crush cans (or just put them whole into the bin!)

Take care.

Hi Jan,

Its a thing made of strong metal that is screwed to the wall. you sit the can in it and pull a heavy lever over and down on it and it crushes it to a disk.

It is one of the most horrid noises i have ever heard.

Jules

Maybe you need to unscrew it and 'lose' it one day! Buy something much more gentle (or just put the cans in the bin uncrushed. If he really loves squashing them, how about jumping up and down on them?

yes in that I find noise hard.

for myself it's generally less just something is "loud" is more clutter so loud work disco thats fine, going for meals/drinks in bar last night for 2hrs where sound bounces around has done me in, spend the day crashed out!

I work in a residential home and have one lady who doesn't put in her hearing aids very well and they whistle very loudly. To me they are making such a noise that it hurts my ears but I'm sure the other staff think I am making a fuss over nothing.

Hi Jules gosh a beer crusher sounds like my idea of hell too! Like someone also said maybe noise stress is particularly bad when tired. For me it used to be my neighbour's loud music during the early hours or randomly on and off. I had a total breakdown then. I've since moved and now live in a wonderful peaceful area. Noises that now stress me are around people when I travel on trains or buses. Silly things like yesterday a man kept on jingling change in his pocket. Or there is a man who waits for bus I get each morning who walks up and down keeping on passing me. That irritates me just the noise of his feet! Strange but I think we just can't cut out noises like most can. Hope the can crusher can be moved to stop your stress....

yes, i seem to zoom in on the sound (whatever it is) too. It drives me nuts sometimes..

Hi Jules, I feel for you. The beer can crusher at your home sounds like it would be hell on earth for me too.

What sends me bonkers? Leaf blowers. Those noisy high pitched (phallic) things. I always silently curse the person who invented them whenever I hear the dreaded noise.

Sweeping with an outdoor broom is becoming a rare sight these days.

Recently I witnessed a woman quietly & gently sweeping up her fallen leaves from her concrete driveway. Made me smile as I walked past. Simple pleasures. xx

Hi Claire, Jules here

Yes, maybe its a blessing in disguise - making us appreciate simple pleasures.

I am going to take 'exhusted wifes' approach to the Beer Can Crusher - I am going to unscrew it and remove it (feels like getting my own back on the Crusher, which feels good for all the frown lines it has given me.

I think i will bury it in the garden.
