Had a huge battle with my local authority to get a blue badge and they rejected my application because the jobs worth said in her opinion I didn't qualify and should never qualify with a head injury and plenty of people have problems with knees and get on with it and was quite off about it all

I waited a few days and rang up to appeal. Before we launched into the full blown argument, I made sure that the phone call was recorded and then off we went. As expected she went off on one and when I pointed out that the DWP had awarded me higher rate mobility and middle rate care. All she said was "typical what do they know!" so local council workers know more about disability than GP's and the DWP.....

She was swiftly moved from the department and they had to review her paperwork.

Some satisfaction at least

I'll post how it goes for us, though initial application 3 years ago seemed over simplified. After a warning about fraudulent claims they asked a few simple questions and it went through easily.

Cheers, Dev

First claim 6 years ago had an assessment (i have sciatica arthritis etc) passed ok last time renewed ok this time i made sure i mentioned i fall due. To TBI chap was really sympathetic

My bus pass runs out next year and as I don't drive it has saved me a fortune. I don't expect I will qualify for it to be renewed as I am now in full time employment and doing well. PIP hasn't arrived in this area yet but when it does I will lose my lower rate care DLA.

Hi

Just to clarify you don't need to be claiming out of work benefits to qualify for a disabled or senior bus pass you can get the mobility component of DLA/ PIP if in work and have limited mobility check the benefit and work's self assessment to see if you qualify for PIP

Hi forgot to say go for it if you have problems with mobility you should get your pass renewed

Blue badge - just called local council, they read the fraud disclaimer/riot act and confirmed I understood it. After confirming identity they asked "does she get higher rate mobility DLA" - yes - no further questions!

£10 admin charge and take recent photo and copy of DLA award to nearest customer service centre.

Probably more hoops to jump through if you don't get higher rate mobility.

The charges are creeping up though, £10 admin. They just started charging £120 pa for telecare too.

Regards, Dev

SORRY IF I'M BEING A BIT DIM HERE BUT WHAT IS A BLUE BADGE?

In terms of qualifying what "normally" happens is that you complete their application form and if you don't receive something like DLA or are registered blind they will write to your GP.

Once you have your badge you can use it on any vehicle that your are a passenger in.

In my area you can also get a carers bus pass so if you qualify and someone to help you, they get free travel as well

You can get a disabled persons bus pass if a) you would not be issued a drivers licence by the DVLA or b) you recieve a mobility component of DLA /PIP c)you have a disability which prevents you walking without severe discomfort I believe this distance needs to be lest than 50 metres

there are 2 ways to get a blue badge either under b or c above if you claim under c you may be assessed

the blue badge can be used in any car in which YOU are the passenger it cannot be used if you are not in the car

Be aware that should you get a badge the powers that be are checking that the badge is being used appropriately in Yorkshire their have been cases of inappropriate use and the badge has been withdrawn and fines of £1000 issued

in reply to

Sorry pressed enter by error

GO FOR IT

in S Yorkshire you have to provide evidence as the GP's will not sign the forms on the advice of their governing body if the evidence is inconclusive then you have to go for an assessment by a physiotherapist BEWARE that you are video'd from entering the car park till leaving the car park after the assessment by a physiotherapist

I found this out purely by accident whan I attended an assessment centre for a hearing assessment

THANKS EVERYBODY THIS HAS HELPED NO END. I THINK I WILL GO FOR IT & WAIT FOR THE ABUSE FROM INTERFERING PEOPLE SHOUTING "HOW DARE YOU USE A DISABLED SPACE WHEN YOU'RE NOT DISABLED" I HAVE A RESPONSE READY & WAITING!
