Brain-fart moment

Hi folks,

I had a little brain-fart moment today.

I usually go out on my own twice a week which I really enjoy doing too.

Well today I was walking to the bus station and the bus I wanted was due, ready and waiting. I got on the bus and stopped to get my bus pass out of my bum bag but I couldn’t find my bus pass.

I was fumbling and fumbling and still couldn’t see it.

I got off the bus and sat on a nearby seat and then realised I was looking in the wrong pocket :).

This kind of thing has happened to me before.

Anyway, the bus hadn’t left the station and I got back on ok.

The driver who I have seen before is usually quite a grumpy looking lady and doesn’t even look at ya but when I got back on the bus she was facing my direction and I think she may have had a little smirk on her face.

My mum was saying that she may have had wind haha.

I tried to use my driving licence on the bus and couldn't work out why the bus driver kept telling me that I was doing something wrong!

Oh dear! It's good to know I am not the only one who does things like that!

I do much the same keep everything in set pockets, so I know where to find them. i had the same experience on a train when the ticket inspector came around , repeatedly fumbled in my pockets, standing up to check my trouser pockets, sitting down again wriggling about - and the guy casually mentions - "is that your ticket in front of you on the table ?"

Doh !, Doh ! Doh !

:-)

I’ve done something similar to what you were saying too but the good thing was it wasn’t when I was out and about :).

It is one of those things about a head injury - the constant putting things down and losing them to the perpetual "senior" moments.

Last Saturday was a particularly "senior" one - the international rugby Kick off was at 2 pm but on the TV guide it said coverage said coverage would start at 2:30pm. I couldn't work out why they would miss the first part of the game. Checked the kick off time again yep 2pm, tv guide still said 2:30 pm. Searched the internet for reasons - nothing. Back to check the start times - then I realised I was looking at channel 4+1 hour !

That was 20 minutes of high frustration, self doubt, stress and then afterwards seeing both the funny side and stupidity

Ah, you have got to see the funny side to these silly things you do, or what our broken brains tend to make us do.

“You gotta laugh, otherwise you’d cry”.

Usually if I make silly mistakes I end up calling myself explicit names for a laugh haha.

Strangely enough I was told off by a Neuro Psychologist for laughing at myself when I have a one of those moments. According to her, it subconsciously undermines your self confidence by mocking ourselves. I just laughed, then said "sorry I was just mocking you" For some reason she didn't see the funny side :-)

Someone at my Headway once said years ago that you shouldn’t laugh at yourself when you do something you can’t exactly help but the thing was she was under the impression that I get angry at myself if I were to do something wrong.

That was the difference, getting ANGRY with yourself is not good, it’s not good for your health.

It is not a bad thing to LAUGH at yourself though (I don’t think it is).

“Laughter is the best medicine” for one and that statement is quite true as well, Headway will tell you so :).

I go out with hubby or Daughter and all of us have them moments whatever we really went out for we never get it ...Such are those brain moments xxxx Glad all was well. xxx

I have actually found myself walking in a ciecle at home, when i say walking in a circle i mean i start walking to do or get something but forget what it is when im up walking and then turn back around when i cant remember to retrace my steps into remembering lol

Yes, I have done this one a few times too.

I could be sat downstairs, suddenly think that I must go get something upstairs, I then go upstairs and by the time I am in the room I was supposed to go to (for some reason) I forget what the actual reason was.

So then I go back downstairs and then... EUREKA!

And I find myself going back upstairs :).

I am guessing that everyone with a BI has heard, from an able-bodied person, “Oh we all do that” or something similar.

Once at my Headway, I was sitting down talking to a friend and then the manager (at the time) walked into the room, then stopped and said “Why did I come in again?”.

Then I said something like “That’s my job” or “I should be doing that”.

Brain injury is so complex and although able-bodied people can share or relate to some of the problems we may experience I feel like sometimes people don’t think you have as big as a problem once thought.

Not what you're looking for?
