Is Spelt Flour gluten free? I have read different opinions on whether it is or is not gluten free. Does anyone know the truth either way?

No. It's a variety of wheat and contains gluten. It is not safe for coeliacs to eat!

I can confirm what Northern Soul says - it is definitely NOT gluten free. The confusion arises because (for those who are not coeliac) spelt flour is often better tolerated than modern, more refined, wheat flour.

Kamut is also a variety of wheat. But buckwheat is not wheat at all :-)

Thank you for all your answers. I thought it was the case that spelt flour did contain gluten. But I read a piece in the Daily Mirror about some fad diet that Nigella Lawson had done. In the article it stated spelt flour did not contain gluten. So it started me thinking again. Now you have all told me that IT DOES contain gluten. I am sending an e-mail to the Daily Mirror to point out their error. This send mixed messages to people recently diagnosed. Thank you once again. Really glad I joined this website.
