I tend to do my own gf baking and have noticed the cost of raw ingredients have been going up for a while. Have been stocking up while I can.
Looks like the price of everybody's food is going up!
Becoming a very pricey country the UK.
I did a quick like for like price comparison on a couple of staples today.
Tesco Tiger Loaf 400gm ................................£0.80p
Warburtons GF Tiger Loaf 400gm.............£3.45p
= 4.3 X the price
Choc Hobnobs 600gm...............................£2.00p
Choc Hobnobs 150gm GF........................£2.20p
= 4.4 X the price
I quite like the hobnobs, but I haven't found any good GF bread yet. If the ingredients have to change to try and keep prices down, can they really make GF bread worse than it already is?
Jeez, that is an eye-opener for sure. Shocking. It's going to be like communist Russia for us where it takes a week's salary to buy one loaf of bread. There has got to be a more to that pricing than the cost of ingredients and strictness of production. I genuinely think there needs to be a consumer watchdog investigation on these products to look at price and acutual 'gluten freeness' of the products. Eyewatering price differences.
One of my sons bought me a Panasonic Bread Maker with a gluten free setting. It works well and the bread is much nicer than I am able to buy. I am Gf and Dairy free. I reduce the oil required and add Flora Plant or Vitalite margarine to make up the difference. The texture is a bit like 'crumpets' but since I like the latter than is not a problem. Could be worth others trying.
That sounds good, particularly the GF setting. Good tip.
As if we don’t pay enough for our free from foods already there now going to charge us more?
Seems it may be heading that way.
I was literally just saying about the cost yesterday. I’m finding it harder and harder financially to maintain GF. Coupled with having to be DF, no Oligos food groups.
It becomes near impossible I'm dairy-free as well and rely on calcium/vit K/magnesium which I have to buy myself as ones on prescription are cack. Can't have the dairy free fake milks as don't agree with me. Totally get where you are coming from.
Yep,I keep a spreadsheet of all the supplements (with cost, date ordered) I take. No comment on what is prescribed 😬👍🏻
Yet another reason why some GF staple foods should have remained on prescription !
