I'm looking for help with my Tye 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. When I first went GF my blood sugar shot up. Now I am much better and more active and I am dropping my insulin every day as my blood sugars are constantly on the brink of hypo. I take low dose of insulin and recently my total daily dose has been between 14 and 17 units. I am stacking up with carbs between meals. I use an insulin pump and have been cutting both basals and bolus and running temporary basals a lot. I just wondered if this is normal because it's the exact opposite of what everybody said wold happen.

Am a Type 2..and would be guided by others who might know more than I do....

Yes my sugars were all over the place...I only check once a day..but I have found that I get what I now know to be swift variances...not as far as a hypo...but too close for me.

I now have to watch every morsel of food.

Sticking to protein...with fibrous veggies..and only a bit of fruit...seems to suit me better.

I am also in bother with thyroid...and still only learning.

What you know is banned on one diet..and somethings are banned on the other...and if you really try...some goodies are banned on both...

What I do know for certain is that the words of wisdom from other readers will follow shortly.

With best wishes

We have had other members of the group ask similar questions and you may see something on the list link here Mmmm. If you aren't able to see anything that helps then please ask again and I am sure someone will be able to be of help.

I would recommend the DAFNE course for type 1 diabetics. They really help you with your dosing and working it out. It's much more complicated than my boyfriend and I first thought! Lots of different things to take into account. It's the best thing my boyfriend could have ever done. And it's free!! All type 1s should be enrolled on this course at diagnosis on the NHS. If you've not been on it, I would 100% recommend it. And no, I dont work for them ;-) good luck.

Unfortunately DAFNE isn't available where I live. I have had a course in the DAFNE principles. Someone on another site told e they always reduce their boluses for GF foods by 50 pc and I think they might be right. Also I have a nasty suspicion something else is going on with my body. My consultant suggested Addisons disease is quite likely. I am hoping not.

also because I've had Diabetes type1 for 39 years, plus Coeliac, Osteoporosis followed and then Thyroid my clinic seem to think I should know it all anyway - no offer of Dafne - diet is a nightmare for people like us...can Diabetes Uk help??

I looked up the DUK web site yesterday and downloaded their On-line Carb Counting resource. I reckon that 90% of the food items in it had gluten in so it wasn't really useful. I e-mailed them and got back the response "It is designed to be an introduction to people to the whole concept of carb counting so that they then feel able to apply it to their own circumstances."

I am seeing the GI dietitian on Thursday and no doubt if I mention diabetes it will be treated as something totally irrelevant - probably because she doesn't know anything about it. Getting the carb values of foods right is as important as not eating gluten for me as the consequences can be quite difficult as you will know yourself.
