Coeliac or Wheat intolerance?

I’ve been tested for Coeliac before, and even though the test came back negative I’ve been having issues with things like bread, pasta etc. I try to avoid it due to it causing me a lot of discomfort, is it worth seeing a doctor just in case it’s an intolerance I could have?

Many thanks

If your coeliac test was a year or more ago, I suggest being tested again, before cutting anything out, as being negative once is no guarantee you don't have it now.

Otherwise, why not try going gluten free for a few weeks. If this sorts your symptoms out, you can then try re-introducing rye and barley, but no wheat. If you stay well, you will know it is "only" a wheat intolerance, but if you feel bad again, you will need to stay off all gluten.

It was in 2015, I was tested for other things alongside it too and all my tests came back negative, I was still having issues but was put on Lansoprazole and Ranitidine to help manage symptoms, came off both of those in 2019 after speaking to a doctor as they are strong medications and they weren’t helping me much. I’ll see if I can get tested again. Thank you for your help!

Hi. Yes. If you’re having issues with wheat and or gluten containing foods try to get tested again. But you must be eating gluten containing diet to be accurate as possible. The spectrum of gluten disorders is autoimmune coeliac disease, wheat allergy, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. Similar symptoms. The first two can be tested for by blood test initially. If negative then worth elimination diet and go gluten free to see if get better. Also look into the low FODMAP diet too as wheat is one of the main culprits - as it’s high in fructans that can trigger ibs in sensitive people.

Hope you figure it out.

My antibodies were negative, but biopsy showed marsh 3a score which happens usually due to celiac. my doctor said it’s celiac. I also had genetic panel test which came back positive. So doctor said genetic panel with positive biopsy consistent with celiac disease. So I wouldn’t trust those test, because according to Mayo Clinic 10% of people with celiac have negative blood results. That I was told…

I tested positive for wheat allergy but not celiac. I have GI issues with wheat as well as nasal congestion and headaches.
