My husband is a Coeliac and loves Chinese food. Is there anything he can safely eat at a restaurant or take away?

Rice is not gluten.

Don’t eat noodles which are gluten.

Avoid the soya sauce.

And no monosodium glutamate (MSG).

No spring rolls as the wrap is gluten.

I eat oriental foods of all types with no problems.

I avoid Chinese altogether because there is not much that doesn’t have soy sauce or flour. Sweet and sour dishes are generally ok, if it is just with steamed prawns or chicken. They will have to really clean the wok before they cook his. bean sprouts, pak Choi, vegetables with no noodles unless it’s rice noodles. Avoid curry sauce. There is more choice at the Indian to be honest it’s safer.

Our local Chinese /fish and chip takeaway will do everything "gluten free" if you ask them.

It's worth enquiring next time you pass your shop

My local Chinese lists their GF options on the menu. It makes such a difference. My chicken & sweetcorn soup may be a different colour to anyone else’s, but I love knowing I can continue to enjoy some of my favourite foods. Try asking your local Chinese what they can do as your husband won’t be the only person asking for GF.

BTW I buy Kikkomen soy sauce and make a mean chicken fried rice 😊

I've found that most Thai food is safe as they don't tend to use Soy Sauce as much in their dishes. I know it's not quite the same bu it will satisfy my cravings for Asian cuisine. Of course stick to the dishes labeled GF and ask for the cook to use a clean pan / wok...

Hi,

I don't eat out at Chinese restaurants or takeaways any more. As others have mentioned the soy sauce is a big issue. But also because I believe that it is traditional not to always wash out a wok between uses. So I like to err on the side of caution when it comes to this cross contamination risk.

I make a mean satay with rice noodles at home though - it's delicious!
