I called Kraft today and was advised that the artificial flavouring in Bird's custard powder contains rye and is NOT gluten free. Very confusing every blog Ive read says it is gluten free. ?????

You can't trust blogs; you have to contact the company directly if it doesn't say gluten free! People think they are eating gluten free but really, they're not!

Just make your own. Milk,vanilla,egg yolks,gf cornflour and sugar. Tasty , fresh and no uncertainty regarding it's suitability for coelics. Blog suggestions are anecdotal and not a guarantee. Better to take the manufacturers disclosure into account and source an alternative or make your own.

The recipie for nanimo bars calls for a cream centre which is made with icing sugar mixed with dried vanilla powder and buttet so it had to be a powder.

Ah! Suppose you could try making up your own "dry" custard powder mix using powered eggs / milk in place of their fresh wet ingredients that would essentially become custard if reconstituted . Beyond that, not sure what to suggest.

I bought some vanilla pudding mix made by Loblaws here in Canada. I called them and they informed me no wheat or gluten so I'll take a chance and try this instead of the Bird's custard! Where theres a will theres a way!!!!!

Hi patricia 1040 patricia here I agree that birds custard powder is definitely not gluten free I buy alpro carton custard in asda or tesco I use it on my trifle for me at christmas & put it on my sponges & apple pies etc I would not trust any labelling that does not say gluten free on it I am so careful with my food babe becouse I have been glutened so many times in trusting the family & labels & have been so ill with it so be safe & if in doubt leave it out patricia

Thanks for the info not familiar with those places as reside in Canada . Will probably take the advice of another blogger and make some homemade if I can get her recipie? Wanting to make some nanimo bars for xmas. Still trying to find out if Frys cocoa and Bakers semi sweet chocolate are gluten free. I called on these also and couldn't get a yes or no either way

I find it very worrying to find that there is gluten in things that are supposed to be gluten free. I go by the Coeliac UK directory, and Birds original custard is listed as being gluten free. Someone on this sight also mentioned recently things like tea and coffee as not being gluten free. I know there can be a problem with some cheap instant coffee, but tea....... life wouldn't be worth living without a cup of tea! How on earth do you decide what is ok and what isn't?

If you are in the UK, all food stuffs have to label anything with any allergens in, such as wheat, rye, barley. This includes teabags.

Hi babe patricia here I find out all the time that the things I eat & drink have gluten in them I feel the same as you about my cuppa buts its true about teabags being gluten in them I no now even though I am vigilant with my food you carnt get away with a mi nute of gluten in everthink thats says gluten free its by law sayen we can tolerate a bit of gluten in the food but I went down hill fast with haven hidden gluten in gravys & ready meals I have been looking in to the app that can detect gluten in yur food you think is safe but its pricecy for me at the moment I think it should be free on the nhs but they dont care so you have got to keep yur self safe hun & if in doubt leave it out patricia

If the custard powder contained rye I would have thought that it would have to labelled as it is a recognised allergen. It's always been described as corn flour based.

That's exactly what I thought. I mentioned to her that by law allergens have to be listed. She didn't have an answer for that but continued to say the artificial colours contained rye. Don't know if she really knew what she was talking about. Nicoles recipie gluten free on a shoe string nanimo bars call for Birds custard? She is generally pretty accurate with gf ingredients!

Thanks George dont know if you got my reply but Im sending again just in case. The Birds Custard here in Canada is supplied by Kraft Canada and it could be for that reason the ingredients are not the same. I called the toll free number on the can for Kraft Canada and they told me directly that there is rye in the artificial flavour (or colour cant remember which). I sent a follow up email to Kraft today to clarify for if there was rye the law demands you list it under allergens. Dont really know if the person I spoke to knew what they were talking about. Will post the answer that Kraft sends to me.
