Have any women with FND had an operation for pelvic prolapse and/or rectocele?

Hi there, I was wondering whether any women in this community can share some advice?

I'm 40 years old and need surgery to repair a uterine prolapse and and rectocele and have been diagnosed with FND. I'm sure the two are connected and feel that my muscles are weak. I'm worried about the success of the surgery as feel that my body will not heal and repair as it should due to FND. It's also quite tricky to find a gynecologist who has a real understanding of neurological problems. I suppose ultimately I'm worried about any surgery making my problems worse.

Any advice would be gratefully received,

Many thanks.

Hi Butterfly

I understand your worry, but try not. You need this operation regardless of your fnd. I have suffered with symptoms for years with only getting a recent fnd diagnosis. I had a rectocele, cystocele and bladder sling operation about 5 years ago and yes it was difficult to overcome and took some time healing but im sure that would have been the same fnd or not??? I never considered my muscles were weak due to the fnd, but I think you need to not worry about it, or the doctors undersanding and do what I assume you normally do which is...cope. get it done and get it over with xxx

Good luck I hope everything goes well xx

Take care

Hi firstly I have nothing similar to prolapses, I do have biomechanical insufficiency and rely on my pelvic muscles far too much for stability and diaphragm breathing support. So to a certain extent understand your concerns.

However, FND does not cause structural problems in the main body - it only affects the brain causing the brain to change slightly and be confused by mixed nerve signals.

So any surgery anywhere in the body (other than the brain) will only add to brain signal confusion for awhile as it readjusts the feedback, as with any non-FND patients who have surgery. Though having your bad pelvic structural nerve feedback currently cannot be great for calming down your FND mixed brain signals in itself?

Obviously you must take decisions based on your surgeons advice and what you think you can cope with to maintain a good lifestyle.

It is a fact that the Brain does not store any reserve oxygen, energy or nutrients, so whatever you do or don't do- be assured the Brain will not physically suffer, it will take what it needs to survive at all times first, before letting the rest of the body have anything!

Probably you will have more side effects from the General Anaesthetic than the physical surgery on your FND I would guess? It takes 6 weeks for those Anaesthetic chemicals to leave the system and if Co2 Gas inflation for non-open surgery that takes 4 months to leave the system - I have always found Breathing Exercises the easiest and most useful for clearing the Brain that bit quicker after Anaesthetics.

Good luck

Hi there

I have not had the procedures you referred to however I have had a hysterectomy and have FND. FND did not impact me at all in relation to the hysterectomy nor did it hinder my healing from surgery. Ask all your questions of your gynnaecologist and I am sure they will be able to reassure you. The nursing staff in the hospital following surgery were also wonderful in assisting me with issues related to my FND while recovering.

I had posterior repair and super pubic catheter all in one day and FND..Surgery was in September so far so good the healing is not bad other than having a big bladder infection so far the antibiotics aren’t working and making a reaction to my other meds Tegretol it’s giving me high liver enzymes i am not sure why if it’s from posterior repair or the catheter but i wish you luck it is worth the repair
