Gabapentin and similar drugs lessen the flow of saliva, which can lead to a build up of plaque and tartar, then gum recession, and soreness.
When taking these medicines, it's vital to see your dentist regularly and to be very careful with brushing and flossing to prevent this build up from happening.
If you have developed soreness already, it's best to see your dentist asap, so that he can clean off any tartar which has built up behind the gums - nasty but very necessary!

I just lost two teeth to this. Please follow Ladymoth's advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hiya guys
thanks for the warning just called my dentist seeing someone tomorrow! I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH NO-ONE WARNS YOU I.E GP WISE! thank god you guys are here. x kez x
OMG! That my be the reason why I am always in discomfort with my gum. Thanks for posting this comment. Yes, This is something that bothers me. But I don't know what's wrong because contrary to what ladymoth said, I over salivate and this bothers me too. Gives me headaches with the amount od salive I keep producing and annoys me to sleep as I am self concious all the time. I want to stop Gabapentin anyway and go back to anti-depressant, it gave me a relief in the first month but now I am putting weight. I also feel low all the time.So probably, for me, Gabapentin still not my answer...I was better with the anti-depressant., I think. I wish I knew what to do...Get upset I have to go back again to GP and ask her to change again... Gosh, not easy isn't!?
Well Gabapentin are in the class of anti seizure drugs which by some happy accident have been found to help with neuropathic pain and so it is used to treat Fibro. No one knows how it works exactly. If you look up gum and teeth problems and anti seizure meds you will find the link. These drugs can cause gum overgrowth which means deeper pockets can occir between teeth and gums causing more likelyhood of gum disease happening leading to the base of the tooth and even the roots getitng infected again, leading to deterioration of bone below the surface and loosenign and eventual loss of tteeth.
Tha said, the only painkiller which worked in the six months I had severe tooth ache was gabapentin. Ironic.
The long wait was due to the fact that I have to go to a clinic to have dental work and have a valium injection as a sedative because I cant keep my mouth open for long without pain as I suffer from tmj which is jaw pain.
Dont stop taking this drug suddenly, actuallatthe risk of more teooth probs I am sill taking it. Now though I have an elecric toothbrush, floss, interdental sticks, cordodyl dentl gel and mouthwash.
so sorry for any spelling/grammar mistakes. I am working with laptop on table and seem to keep brushing wireless mouse and front of keyboard with my sleeves causing words to jumpa about.
Yes I am losing my teeth and my gums hurt so much but every time I make an appointment with the dentist I have a flare up due to stress as am frightened of the dentist they don't tell you about gum problems or weight gain when you start your medication x
i have chewing gum which helps to keep mouth moist and not dry up so much.i am on gabapentin and ampytriplin. x
Chewing gum is a very good idea - especially the sugar free type!
Yes, I have had terrible problems with tooth decay. My two front teeth now have crowns and I need 4 more upper teeth to be crowned and I have noticed that about 5 front bottom teeth are having the same problem. I m surprised thee isn't a class action suit against who ever makes this drug!
