There is quite a bit of information available on the Internet (though I am not sure how reliable the souces I have been reading are so I won't quote them) and it sounds as if it might be a really good alternative to other strong painkillers available without some of their more unpleasant side effects. As it is only available on prescription it is probably worth exploring with your GP or pain clinic if you think it might be helpful for you. Jane x

Tapentadol (Palexia® SR) is a new opioid analgesic which, in immediate-release (IR) form, is licensed for the relief of moderate to severe acute pain in adults.

Adverse effects of Tapentadol are similar to those of other opioid analgesics including the potential for dependence. The most common adverse effects involve the central nervous and gastrointestinal systems. Gastrointestinal adverse effects are less common with Tapentadol than with Oxycodone, and the incidence of central nervous system effects is similar to Oxycodone.

Hmm this is interesting as I have read conflicting opinions on opiates being effective for fibro, but then it doesn't matter to me as I am not allowed any opiate based meds as I have immediate and nasty reactions to them.... The only med I know works for me every time and gets me feeling great is diazepam but I am only allowed it for a week or so at a time. I really wish the medical profession would get it into their heads that quality of life is much preferable to quantity, I don't want my gp to keep me alive to 90 in constant pain, I.ll quite happily settle for less and be pain free

Rant over

Hello all,

Further information about this medication can be found via this link :

patient.co.uk/medicine/Tape...

I personally have not heard of it's effectiveness when used as a Fibromyalgia treatment.

So cannot advise you whether it is a treatment that may or may not be beneficial.

I would talk to you Rheumatology Consultant or GP regarding their knowledge regarding the treatment for Fibromyalgia.

For reference FibroAction Website has a medication section with a Downloadable Fact Sheet for those who haven't looked at this already link below:

fibroaction.org/Pages/How-I...

I look forward to any further threads on Tapentadol with interest.

Best Wishes

Emma
