I have to have an operation on 11 July after it I can't use my crutches for 4 to 6 weeks. this means I lose my mobility. Does anyone know where I can get awheelchair on loan (and not pay large amounts of money as I wont be in work - no work no pay)?

Oh I live in Redbridge Essex.

You could try the Red Cross, there are lots of branches around the country. I hired a chair from them a few years ago, and I think it was a case of paying a nominal fee, and then giving them a donation of what you could afford / thought it was worth.

Hope you get sorted.

Thanks. I tried the red cross and was told I need to pay £100 refundable deposti and then a fee every week. £100 will keep food in my cupboard for the four weeks unfortunately. But Thanks x

Ah. Not so good. Maybe different branches have different policies, or maybe they have changed - I had mine about 9 or 10 years ago. Maybe you could also try your local OH department. They might do equipment loans. Good luck with the search - I hope you find something.

hi if you ask your Gp to refere you to the wheelchair service they should be able to give you a wheelchair for the length of time you need one and it's free. Also you could phone the consultant secretary who is doing your op and ask her if a wheelchair will be supplied to you after your op

hugs poppy xx

Hi all

I ended up having to get PALS involoved this morning and suprise suprise, my GP is ringing me back after 4.00 today. Three journeys to the doctor and a few telephone calls to the receptionist didn't work for me but the one phone call from PALS did. I have no emotion left its all been taken away the more I have to do with my GP and the polyclinic.

Shopmobility may be able to help with a wheelchair for inexpensive short term hire. Not sure about your area but know they have a hire facility at the ones I use here in Fife.

I went to shopmobility and they asked if I recieved high rate DLA, the moment I said no he was not really interested and started to tell me all sorts of things, out of politeness I listenend until another person came in and I excused myself and made a hasty exit. But thanks anyway.
