Citalopram is an SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor to give it its full name. These are first line drugs prescribed for anxiety, depression, panic disorder, OCD etc. They help to increase the amont of serotonin available. Serotonin being an important neurotransmitter.
Its believed Fibro patients can have low levels of neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine which might explain some of the symptoms of Fibro, like fatigue, chronic pain and depression and or anxiety.
Im curious as to why your parents are against you taking them and with respect its not really any of their business. You're an adult and can make your own decisions about your medical care.
I understand your reservations, I have chronic migraines and low dose antidepressants are sometimes used as a migraine preventative. I tried 3 and couldnt get on with any of them due to side effects, but until you try you wont know. You might be fine and often the side effects greatly lessen over time anyway. The drugs company has to list every known side effect, if you read cold and flu capsule leaflets you'll see a list as long a your arm.
The choice is ultimately yours and no one should be pressuring you either way. But you need to ask yourelf honestly how much your anxiety is affecting you and your quality of life and are there non medication things you can try like CBT, therapy, mindfulness, meditation that you might want to try before going down the antidepressant route. Or if your anxiety is very bad then maybe antidepressants might be the answer.
The thing is you're not obliged to stay on Citalopram if it doesnt suit you. But most will need a least a month and possibly longer to see if its having an effect. And you might find some of your Fibro symptoms easing aswell.
