Eye ache

Hi, I have recently been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia although, I have had the symptoms for about 5 years. I've recently developed a dull ache through my left eye. I'm not prone to eye infections or anything like that and as this occurs more when I'm having a flare up I'm wondering if this is some kind of neurological pain associated with Fibromyalgia and if anyone else has experienced it? Thanks!

Hi Donna_1 🌿🌸🦋

My friend’s son had such pain in his eye. She took him to the eye doctor and he was diagnosed with a tumor behind his eye.

I think you should see your eye doctor just in case it’s something serious. Better to be safe than sorry.

Best wishes for a good outcome; sorry you’re suffering so much.

Love and prayers,

EJ 🤗♥️🥰🙏🕊🤝❤️‍🩹🌿🌸🦋

Yes - I get this a lot - glasses (if you have them) really help. I think it may be particularly if you are long sighted. There are muscles in that area and I think it’s that. I suffer with it a lot and can be really bad so I sympathise. Eye drops help too as can also be the eye getting dry. Hope that helps and good luck

Thanks for your reply. I am due to have my eyes tested soon so it could be a change of prescription that might help...thanks!

I have eye ache too,one of my earliest symptoms - I was thirteen - and it affects sights too. Recently, it has been so that bad reading on the screen, especially when presenting on zoom, was almost impossible. As a child I complained and was given glasses. I honestly believed that eye sight problems hurt and people thought that I was lying. Mine comes with fibrofog and sometime with a migraine.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I too get the fibrofog with it but not migraines thankfully..

Hi Donna, I have experienced eye pain in my left eye for quite some time now, it got so bad my doctor sent me to eye A&E and I had my eyes fully checked (dye in etc) and it turned out my eyes are absolutely fine just very dry so I use eye drops up to 4 times a day if needed (mostly just in morning) and I no longer suffer this awful eye pain. I was really worried it was something more serious so glad I got them checked over.

Kind Regards

My sister and myself have Fibro and suffer with eye pain/strain. We both have dry eyes. I use a heated eye mask and eye drops. Would definitely recommend a trip to see the optician, who recommended I do this.

Hi KK, where would I get a heated eye mask and what eye drops do you use? I also suffer with very dry eyes and my brother had a detached retina. Take care ❤ and thank you.

Hi Donna_1. I have Fibromyalgia & have for May years now. I went to spec savers to use my free VDU eyecare voucher from work back in September. They offered a £10 additional service for a new photographic test of the eyes. I thought oh well only £10 why not. I glad I did as it revealed Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR) in my RHS Eye. Specsavers wrote to my GP but Due to Covid nothing came of that. Not sure if it’s connected to Fibromyalgia though.

Hi Donna, I've had fibro since last summer after hurting my neck... then I had a constant headache and pain in my left eye, which my gp put down to sinusitis... no it wasn't ... it was the start of fibro. I had my eyes checked as I previously had a detached retina, but there was nothing wrong with the eye. I have continual headaches which affects my left eye and vision.. Yours may very well be as a result of your fibro, but do get it checked out. Someone suggested spec savers, they are probably the cheapest but there are other opticians who can scan your eyes... prices do vary. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with one's eyes..... best safe than sorry.

good luck x

Thanks for sharing your experience..I will def see Specsavers this week...thanks for the advice x

Hi Donna, if spec savers pick anything up, I think they would normally write to your gp who may refer you? That could take some time. If it is an eye condition, ask them to explain it fully and then if you are still concerned about it, you can always ring the eye clinic and ask if there's someone you could speak to. It depends how busy they are... usually they are rushed off their feet... Take care

Hi Nuffield, what eye drops did the eye infirmary give you? Are the drops prescription only or can they be bought over the counter. Many thanks and take care ❤

Hi Donna_1, i suffer from migraines, they can come in many forms, such as a weeping eye that lasts for days, an ache and dryness of one eye, they can just make the eye and eye socket feel bruised. Hope this stops you thinking terrible thoughts, and yes fibromyalgia does include migraines.

Donna_1 profile image

Thanks, yes I do get weeping eye as well..reassuring to know I'm not the only one..thank you

Hi Donna_1

I experience eye pain too!!

I get pain behind my eyes and frontal headaches. I also have Conversion Insufficiency which means the muscles in your eyes are weak, therefore your eyes don't work together properly. I have visual exercises to help strengthen my eye muscles (could be caused by Fibro????)

I also have very light sensitive eyes. It affects me only at night or in low light settings. It's mainly caused by bright lights from mobile phone screens and the television screens. If I look at bright light I get a searing pain behind my eyes and my eye balls. I have been to see a Orthoptist who said that my sensitivity to light may be due to having light coloured eyes. Nothing can be done about it apart from wearing sunglasses, I'm wearing them now as I type this message to you. I wear sunglasses most evenings or when I feel the pain starting. I have also adjusted the brightness on my phone to virtually nothing to stop this eye pain.

I can't recommend enough getting your eyes tested. I work as a receptionist in an opticians and the Optometrist did lots of checks and it is important to get it checked out.

Good Luck let me know how you get on Xx

Hi Seaside thanks for that...good to know I'm not alone although your pain does sound awful too. I do hope the sunglasses help! X

Hi Donna - could you keep us updated about the result of the check and any help you find?

My eye problems aren't as painful, and checks didn't help, but my eyesight is always better after good, gentle osteopathy, acupressure and acupuncture, as well as muscle relaxing supps like the amino acid GABA, so I think mine are muscular.

Donna_1 profile image
Donna_1 in reply toJayCeon

Hi Jay...well my eye test was fine thanks, which was reassuring. Today I had a chiropractic session and she worked on my neck which has been extremely painful lately (more than usual) including my occipital nerve which was pinched apparently. I felt instant relief...so I'm putting it down to that and will continue with a few more sessions. Fingers crossed it helps long term. Glad to hear you get some relief too...I think osteopathy may be a gentler option for me too.

JayCeon profile image
JayCeon in reply toDonna_1

Donna, good to hear that! :-) Ah yes, the neck - often the bottleneck for many more problems than we'd think, above and below it! I think some alternative practitioners overrate it a bit, but mainstream people underrate it. I often have to keep up neck stretches, or start them again if I haven't been doing so, and sometimes at night just 20 seconds solves neck pain without making me up too much...
