Amiltryptiline

Hi everyone. Just wondering if anyone has had the same.

I’ve been on amiltryptiline since the start of the year after previously being on it and coming off cos it really affected my weight. So 6 month in and I’ve ballooned again. Wondering if anyone else has had the same with the amiltryptiline abd then moved to something else that didn’t have the same affect? I’m already carrying way too much weight which obviously doesn’t help anything but to then have put on another 2 stone over the last 6 months is killing me. I desperately need to lose weight which is hard enough when moving more hurts more and also just exhausts me.

Hi Leo i never put weight on with amatryptalyne however it done nothing for me. I moved onto nortryptaline and that made a massive difference, I got prescribed it for pain. It doesn’t take it all away and I still have bad days however for my personally it’s better than amatryptalyne. Do you find it’s helping you at all? 😀

It's spelt Amitriptyline.

It’s clear she meant amitriptyline😊 quite a tricky one to spell! Yes I found I’m the same I’ve swapped to nortryptaline and it’s been better. All that glitters, did you find you was quite fussy headed first few months you started it? Xx

I think it's only clear if you have experience with the drug and your phonetics work.

8years of taking it is experience. I’m dyslexic and I know how frustrating it is when I’m talking about something serious and someone corrects my grammar with no helpful advice back xx

Just want to add in here that I misspell it often and I type the name more often than most :) But getting drug names right can be important especially when asking for advice.

Often I will wait until I get to a keyboard rather than use the phone to make sure posts are correct. We are all different but I agree politeness is the way to go :)

I wasn't trying to be offensive. I just thought it was important that right spelling was there somewhere. By experience I didn't mean experience of the drug I meant experience of the drug name, if you are not an english speaker the phonetics will be lost on you and no one knows what you are talking about. I check drug names on google before I type them because I find spelling difficult. I've been on the drug for over 10 years it doesn't make me gain weight.

Not to worry, I am dyslexic as well. I think we all knew what you mean. I can only take amitriptyline one a week because of such bad side effects but once a week gives me a much needed good nights sleep xx

in reply to Char1-2

I’m not dyslexic and I can only spell it properly because I’ve been on it for a couple of years 🙄.. and I am English 😮..and I’ve gained a couple of stone..sleep really well though 😂

I put on a lot of weight on Ami and (I know some people are lucky and don’t have this) it happened very gradually until I realised my clothes didn’t fit properly and I’ve gone up 2 dress sizes in a year. I have just come off it and I am hoping I can lose the weight. During lockdown I walked every day and ate sensibly and yet I still put on weight. I have read weight gain is a side effect and fairly impossible to control. I find the balance hard when I am not able to vigorously exercise but walking and gentle strength/balance yoga exercises are doable (youtube).

Yes, I am on a small amount of amitriptyline, if I double it, I have noticed a few pounds go on. Mainly I keep on the lower dose unless I feel I need to sleep better

Wow sorry for offending with my poor spelling. I couldn’t figure out how to spell it but knew people would know what o was talking about. I need to speak to my GP. They had offered me pregablin or gabapentin. I dont know whether to try something different or not.

you will only know if they work after you try them. A lot or most people will try multiple drugs before they land on something that can work for them.

I am not offended!

It might be worth giving it a try definitely speak to your gp. I find It’s so hard to find something that doesn’t give other side effects. Hope you manage to sort it with your GP lovely ☺️

I had moderate weight gain but the worst thing was how tired it made me. I couldn’t get off the sofa for half the day, still had insomnia and really didn’t notice any benefit for pain. My daughter was on it for her Fibro as well. My doctor kept convincing me to stay on it. Then my daughter wrecked her car after falling asleep on her way to work. We both stopped taking it and the fatigue went away. We no longer had to drag ourselves around in the mornings. So unless your pain is improved significantly, I would think about discontinuing it.

I had 8 side effects: +6kg weight, faster pulse, fuzzy vision, numb & drowsy day and night, tired all day, even dryer mouth, -> dry cough, then increasing my focal seizures was the last straw after 4 months. Never did anything for my pain, only numbed me for sleep. Much better after weaning it off (fairly quickly).
